“You will pick a date. And you will stand down.”

On the night that the Prime Minister is challenged for his position, TEN launches Hawke promos, with the Deputy after the top job.

TEN was a bit late off the mark last night with the breaking news of the challenge to Rudd. It didn’t put a crawler on screen until just before 9pm, while others such as Laurie Oakes on Nine, broke into regular programming as early as 9:15.

TEN even had an Update at 8:30pm with no mention of the news ….could it have been pre-recorded?

But there was pure theatre following MasterChef when it aired the first look at its new Hawke telemovie at 9pm.

There in the Lodge was acool, calm Paul Keating (Felix Williamson) telling a fuming Bob Hawke (Richard Roxburgh) “You will pick a date… and you will stand down.”

Hawke was very possibly the last sitting PM to be challenged by his deputy.

The telemovie is expected soon on TEN.

  1. I saw the “breaking news” scroll on screen on Masterchef and didn’t think twice. I thought it was just Ten doing their usual news beat up, especially when the “Hawke” ad popped up straight after. How wrong I was.

  2. I Saw the scroll on ten during MasterChef and, thought that it was just them talking about the mining tax and some other big issues in order to resolve them.

However when I finished at around 9:10 I saw Hawke and I turned because I wanted Hey hHy! I did notice that and told my mum! She was defiantly assuming the worst case and lowe and behold at 9:20pm Daryl Sommers thought he was still on for a while but, then to the ad break John Blackman said “Thanks Kevin & Julia”.

Then into Kellie, who I might add tried to get the best from Canberra from Laurie! At then I knew what was coming and by 10:30pm it was clear! He was looking out and ousted!

By 9:25am this morning I was sitting there in awe as we had word that Kevin Rudd conceded defeat!

I must admit breaking news like this historical event in our peacetime is hard to do. But in Tens case I think was good judgment considering 2,039,000 people might have been left in a shock of sorts, and lost their footing on where MasterChef was? Ten did learn a little, as Ron Wilson ended the 9am news he said that Perth will resume normal programming.

But however they should consider it for next time. And Hawke promo is a poor timing! Rudd seeing this would have felt they are against him as well no doubt? They both got highs in polls and then conceded defeats. I think what we really want is, current news and not old stuff being re-made!

  3. I’m not sure viewers would have gleaned any more insight into the unfolding events had ABC24 News been up and running. Sky News was covering the events live and after the first hour or so it became apparent that they were repeating the same lines of rumour, conjecture, and hypothesis over and over. There’s only so many angles that you can cover a train wreck from.

  4. It’s a sad day for 10 news when Hey Hey It’s Saturday out scoops you on a news story…

I saw the preview for this tonight during the news and it looks awesome. Can’t wait for this one!

  5. I don’t think the news was pre-recorded – they just didn’t want anyone to turn over to ABC or Sky from Masterchef! Hence the “breaking news” just as MC was finishing
