Adam Liaw wins MasterChef 2010

Adam Liaw has won the MasterChef 2010 title over his fellow South Australian Callum Hann.

31 year old Adelaide lawyer Adam Liaw has won MasterChef Australia 2010.

He beat fellow South Australian Callum Hann, 20, for the title.

Adam scored 89 points while Callum scored 82 points.

“I’m over the moon. I just can’t believe it. It hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said.

The first challenge was a Basic Skills Test that required them to name a range of ingredients, dice vegetables and whip up an Omlette. Callum’s youth saw him unable to name as many foods as Adam, but he did pick up on the vegetable test. Adam was the clear winner in cooking an Omlette.

By the end of Round One Callum had 13 points to Adam’s 17 points.

Round Two was a 3 way Invention Test before Celebrity Chef Matt Moran, that showcased three cooking techniques. Adam chose to work with Pork Belly while Callum selected Chicken. Callum was ambitious with his dishes, while Adam was branded a “Pork Master” by his teammates.

The judges were blown away by Adam’s dishes. “I take my hat off to you budy, you are a serious cook,” said Moran. But they were equally delighted by Callum’s dish.

“That sauce is liquid gold. It’s brilliant,” said Calombaris.

Callum scored 36 points taking him to 49 points. Adam also scored 36 points taking him to 53 points.

The final round was a Pressure Test dubbed “the hardest dish we have ever had.” It was a a guava and custard apple snow egg dessert from Quay’s Peter Gilmore.

Callum raced ahead of Adam but didn’t quite cook up enough meringue excess to cover any mistakes. Adam remained calm on an intricate dish despite almost fumbling the blowtorching element.

Both served up excellent dishes, with Moran telling Callum he liked the dish more than Gilmore’s sweeter original. Adam was nervous in presenting his dessert but the judges were complimentary on his flavours.

Callum scored 33 points taking him to 82 points. Adam scored 36 points taking him to a winning total of 89 points.

The finale also included the appearance of chefs from across the series including Maggie Beer, Luke Nguyen, Donna Hay and 2009 winner Julie Goodwin. Families of the two also celebrated their success.

Adam’s prize package includes $100,000 and a publishing deal.

Hann was rewarded with a scholarship at Calombaris restaurants for 3 months and $10,000.

TEN also launched its first Junior MasterChef promo with talented 8 – 12 year olds cooking up eye-popping dishes. Get ready to have your taste buds tempted all over again.

  1. T he two best masterchef cooks were in the final callum and Adam.
For a 20 year old Callum, he did so well, amd i’m sure the nation is so proud of him.
I only wish Callum the best of luck, and keep doing what he does best.
    Keep up the good work.
You have heard it from me, (Anna) by the time Callum turns 30, he will be another Jamie Oliver.
Wish you all the very best Callum.

  3. Well done Adam! I knew you could win.

You have been one of my favourite contestants, along with Aaron and Alvin.

Good luck with whatever you want to do in the food industry.

    Congratulations!

  4. David – was the whole finale filmed yesterday or just the reading of the scores/announcement of the winner?

I thought I read somewhere that the actual finale (cooking part I guess) was filmed 2 weeks ago – Was looking at everyone to see if their hair etc had changed much or if they had done a good job to make it look like the whole thing was filmed yesterday!

  5. I found it rather offensive that George expects Callum to move to Melbourne to work for him. Yes, its an opportunity that many will not get, but right now Callum should be naming his $price.

  6. Just heard the ratings on the radio – the winner announced section of the show (the last half-hour) scored 3.962M. The prior two hours got around 3.6M.

  7. Congrats to Adam, the most solid performer in the comp and a thoroughly likeable bloke. He is a publicist’s dream and he will be very easy to promote in terms of his cook book, any future TV appearances, etc. I loved Callum as well, such an adorable young guy and that killer smile! He will go far in the food industry as he is a very quick learner and has an instinctive feel for desserts and pastries, an area of commercial cooking that is always in high demand. Kudos to all involved in the show, it is absolutely addictive, uplifting viewing with high production values and great casting of contestants.

Can’t wait for Junior MasterChef. Looks fab! Does anybody know whether it will be on in prime time or will it be on at a traditional children’s time like 4pm? I am assuming prime time, but because it is slanted to ‘tweenies, I’m not sure.

  8. Just saw Julie on TODAY this morning and they were definately freely talking about Masterchef and what a great experience it was for the people involved. Good to see another network taking the time to take it’s hat off to another network – take a lesson, Channel 7 😉

  9. when do the ratings come out David? I got a cockinbush riding on it. noticed lately I don’t bet with cash or booze lately but with home cooked meals. that can only be a good thing.

  10. Great finale. Everyone involved in the show deserves high praise. And congratulations to Adam for a well deserved win.

David : Was Julie restricted from commenting on air due to commitments to Channel 9?

  11. Agree with u effdee, brilliant show my backside! What a load of crap, finally it’s over and not a moment too soon. Those that like it must in some sort of trance and can’t see it for the snoozefest it really is.
