Axed: Party Down

Starz has cancelled Party Down, its comedy about aspiring Hollywood actors and writers working as caterers.

US Pay TV network Starz has cancelled Party Down, its comedy about aspiring Hollywood actors and writers working as caterers, due to low audiences.

The comedy from co-creator Rob Thomas had included names such as Megan Mullally, Jennifer Coolidge and Jane Lynch in its cast.

It also cancelled out-patients dramedy Gravity.

“After careful consideration, we’ve decided not to continue on with subsequent seasons of Party Down and Gravity,” Stephan Shelanski from Starz Entertainment said.

“Starz remains committed to aggressively expanding our original programming lineup,” he added.

It has having no such problems with Spartacus, and it recently indicated it would tackle a local version of Underbelly.

Thomas said, “I’m not sure that any of us are terribly surprised today, but we’re all really disappointed. One of the things we loved about doing the show is that we felt like we got to write to an audience of our circle of friends. I think that’s exactly who ended up watching it. So, in that respect, mission accomplished!”

The series has aired in Australia on Movie Extra.

  1. I think a couple of the main guys,Ryan Hansen and Adam Scott wouldn’t have been likely to return to a future season due to being on network shows now. So a third season would have been quite difficult.

Good show though, wish they kept it up!

  2. Getting 75,000 viewers in the US is absolutely horrible, not surprised its been axed. It might have been a good, critically acclaimed show but no one had ever heard of it.

  3. I was so very sad when I saw the announcement yesterday. This is one of my favourite comedies in a long time, and every character was so likeable. Sure, two characters were leaving (especially the central character Henry played by Adam Scott), but they could’ve been replaced easily, just as Jane Lynch’s Constance was ably replaced by Megan Mullaly’s Lydia. I’m happy with the last episode though, as it was a satisfying conclusion. I’m not surprised at the low ratings in the US (under 200k most weeks I think) since most viewers watched this online. I wish the entire cast and crew all the best, as they are all a talented bunch.

  4. It wasn’t as funny as last season, since they got rid of Jane Lynch and even Jennifer Coolidge. Megan Mullaly was just not cutting it.
