MasterChef shock as Marion exits

MasterChef viewers were left spinning after the shock elimination of hot favourite, Marion Grasby.

Hot favourite Marion Grasby has been shock elimination from MasterChef Australia, after failing to win over the judges during a tense satay sauce cook off which went down to deciding between her and Aaron.

The 27-year-old South Australian journalist was widely tipped to win the contest, proving time and again she had what it takes to deliver in the kitchen and win support of viewers.

Grasby had been up against Jonathan, Aaron and Adam after Wednesday’s group challenge failure, but Adam opted to use his immunity pin. After Jonathan succeeded a ‘Name that Nut’ test, Marion and Aaron faced off in a satay sauce cook-off. Ironically for Grasby, who has a Thai family background, her sauce was deemed to thick.

“Of course I’m disappointed, but when the judges told me I was out of the competition I had a great sense of calm,” she says.

“I make satay sauce all the time. I think it was the pressure of the situation, having 15 minutes to make the sauce and things sometimes just don’t work out.

“Everyone has a bad day in the kitchen and it was just my time to have a bad day. I have no regrets at all. I never took anything for granted and whenever I walked into the MasterChef kitchen I always treated it as though it was my last day, so it wasn‟t a shock for me, just disappointing.

“But since going home I have made plenty of satay sauces – and, yes, they are thick! In fact, I’m bringing out my own satay sauce in a range I’m working on now.

“My mum makes satay sauce all the time and I’ve made it loads of time too,” admits Marion. “I wanted a thick satay sauce but I was trying to get the right balance of trying to make a sauce the way my mum makes it, and getting the consistency right. But it was slightly too thick and didn’t stand up to Aaron’s sauce.

“I just feel so bad because I’ve had so much support from the public and the media,” she says. “Even though I’ve been eliminated, the show has given me the biggest opportunity of my life. I hope people have found inspiration in what I’ve done.”

With returning contestants Jimmy and Courtney still in the race ahead of Marion, along with the do or die taste tests, there are likely to be questions about levels of fairness

Grasby denies the pressure of being labeled by the public and the media as a favourite got to her in the end.

“We’re always under pressure, and it’s not because everyone says you’re the favourite,” she says.

“It comes down to the pressure that you put on yourself, and it’s a long time that you need to sustain that energy. I don’t think it was a case of pressure, I just had a bad day in the kitchen.

“People always said that I was the favourite, but I never felt that. I’m only human and I know that you can’t always be perfect.”

Grasby was recently named by media as the most likeable contestant with other competitors including Jonathan and Claire not proving popular with viewers.

  1. Masterchef is supposedly supposed to set the contestants up for the culinary world. Callum should be gone. You cannot tell me that you would get an unfinished dish put in front of you on the table and not complain. The chef would probably have fired the chef who did it. Then last night he takes the wrong lobster. He again would have been fired. Sure Marion went fair and square but Callum still in there is not fair to the other contestants especially when he stumbles time and time again!!!

  2. I’ve only watched a couple of mins of an episode MasterChef at most but clearly she is pretty and so should have been kept in the show for the ratings 😉

  3. i think the main issue is that for some reason or other they decided to give jimmy and aaron a free pass for their “amazing” coq au van’s last week… neither of which were even close to the real deal.
so realistically one of them shouldn’t have been still in the competition and therefore the trajectory of the next week would have been entirely different – potentially with no aaron to face off against… and also even teams on the army challenge for that matter.

  4. while marion was a shining light on the show, the reason people are a bit turned off is because the remaining contestants aren’t anything to go by.

they’re dull and not quite up there in terms of culinary skills, whereas she had all the qualities of someone who should take the title – excellent cooking skills, likable personality so they can carry the franchise and heart.

it’s saying something when there isn’t one likable person on there just shy of the finale.

  5. Oh God. Seems like everyone was complaining about it being a popularity contest when Julie won last year, that it was all about selling cookbooks and that it was rigged.

And now everyone’s having a bigger whinge because the most likeable contestant didn’t win this time. People annoy me. None of you had a problem with the elimination process until now. Marion lost fair and square. Be angry at her for not being able to make a sauce, don’t blame the show.

  6. Opinions…. Aaron haters and aaron lovers.

But… to those people who won’t watch MC again, so basically your saying you watched MC because of Marion?? What craziness…

    1. We watch MC because we hope that the most talented cook wins the competition, and when Marion, one of the best cooks of the competition, that was always the first pick on a team challange, and the first contestent to win an immunity pin, gets eliminated on some guy like Aaron, who knows how to cook well only pasta and mexican food, and also has inferior technique to Marion, you start questioning the fairness of the competition and questioning the whole point of this show. It’s not about Aaron and Marion in particular, it’s about who is the better cook.

  7. I really don’t mind that Marion’s gone, I mean it is sad that she’s left and people like Callum and Jimmy remain, but she made a mistake with her satay sauce and she went home because Aaron’s satay was clearly better. Those are just the dangers of elimination rounds. I feel bad for her but everyone knows she’ll do well outside of the competition, having already proven herself.

I’d be ecstatically happy if Jonathon, Courtney or Aaron won from now on =)

  8. FFS all you whingers threatening not to watch again- boo hoo. Live upto your hollow threats, and let the rest of us watch in peace, At the end of the day Marion, who is a far superior all rounder than Aaron, lost the Elimination Challenge. At that point in time she sunk, the name of the game is survival, good luck to all remaining contestant in this competition. Remember no one enters a comp to loose. May the best “survivor” win. Ps Cant wait to buy Marion’s line of food.

  9. What’s with all the Aaron bashing on here? I’m sure he’s a better cook than the majority of you. He’s been my favourite contestant of the series and I’ll admit he might not the best cook in the competition but he’s certainly not the worst. I think the weakest contestant is Callum, followed by Jimmy (he can make a great curry but that’s about it). Anyway; Marion plated up some spectacular dishes but she’s also dished up her fair share of failures. The amount of publicity this elimination has received is ridiculous! It was one of the fairest eliminations I’ve ever seen on this show, just because she has a strong fanbase doesn’t mean she should’ve been given special treatment to keep up the ratings. She’s gone, time to move on.

  10. this is the worst masterchef I have ever seen, good cook like marion are out, bad cook are left, juding are so bad and it’s not fair at all. All of you should have watch Masterchef U.K which have great cookings and very fair judging and by end of final three – they have learn so much and the foods they produce are beautiful!
    Good bye Masterchef Australia.

Get Foxtel and watch qualities show like Materchef UK and Top Chef.

  11. With the TVTonight poll on the main page, “Should Marion have been voted off?”, I voted ‘Yes’ because whilst I believe Marion should have gone all the way and won, the format of the show does put contestants through elimination challenges and unfortunately she didn’t perform the best in that. It was a fair but hugely disappointing loss.

  12. Reminder, it is a game show, play a bad hand and you are out.
The game still continues, does not matter who wins. Marion is super and that will
not change. Look at Poh she lost. I see her on TV all the time.
One at a time will go. Just enjoy the game. It is good to watch, I respect all the
contestants, they have all done well. I think I enjoy the show as I am interested
    in the food and recipes.

  13. Very disappointing…. Marion, my inspiration is gone. I stopped watching Masterchef. Won’t be surprise if the rating goes down.

To Marion… all the Best to you 🙂 🙂

  14. Ok, Marion left and im fully pi**ed off. Of course im an adelaidean and back all the SA’s but it was totally unfair. I mean, i cant imagine anyone of the remaining cooks to be the next MC. They all suck, well lets say they dont live up to the standards that Marion had.

Its gonna be a boring few weeks ahead….

and Poh shouldve won as well.

  15. I too thought that Marion would win the competition, but I can’t believe the outrage and the suggestions that it’s not fair:

    1) The Blue team arguably deserved to win. Despite having less people, they worked better as a team and performed much better than Red Team who were riddled with issues. However the votes decided the outcome and that was fair, given the rules of the challenge.
    2) The new system of points in the nut challenge was much fairer than eliminating the first person to stuff up.
    3) Overall, Marion was a better cook but in that particular challenge, Aaron’s sauce was better. Therefore, Marion got the boot. If they had saved Marion despite this, then *that* would be rigged.

It’s a case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t for Masterchef.

  17. This is the worst decision ever made in reality TV history i recon. How can Jimmy and Aaron get off scot free last week and get through and then this week Marion gets eliminated but has put up the best dishes all competition. I dont give a stuff to what Gary said today when you are only judged on your last dish. That is bull. Jimmy can only cook curries, Aaron isnt that great a cook and Callum, dont get me started. He cant bake, he cant cook for crap, except sometimes when he somehow gets a brilliant dish. Sorry but i am furious.

Then you have Jonathan! He has been in so many eliminations challenges and yet he is still there. I know they keep saying you can cook mate but he continues to get through all the damn time. Why couldnt they make one exception for Marion. This show is the biggest rort. We are after the best amateur cook in the country not the best person that can cook ok in some parts but fail miserably in others.

My tip to win now is Alvin. I think he has been the most consistent and i think Claire is a close 2nd. Courtney also shows she is an awesome cook and it wasnt her fault she was eliminated either, the judges didnt know the right kind of mint. So they are my top 3. The others dont care in the world about.

    end rant…
