Seven wins first election round

What kind of figures did Seven, Nine and ABC1 get for the breaking news of the election announcement on Saturday morning?

Last week Nine’s Laurie Oakes caught the PM off-guard with his question at the National Press Club.

But on Saturday morning it was Seven that came up trumps with the figures for the audience watching the calling of the election.

Seven, Nine and ABC1 all covered the PM visiting the GG, the official announcement, and Tony Abbott’s reply.

Morning/Afternoon telecasts (lead-up, announcement, post):
Seven: 211,000 (0900-1330 Syd/Melb/Bris, 0900-1300 Adel, 0900-1130 Perth)
Nine:195,000 (0900-1330 Syd/Melb/Bris, 0900-1300 Adel, 0900-1000 Perth)
ABC1: 109,000 (1015-1330 Syd/Melb/Bris, 0945-1300 Adel, 0815-1130 Perth)

Update: When the PM made the announcement, four networks weighed in.

Announcement (LIVE: 1204-1236 Syd/Melb/Bris, 1134-1206 Adel, 1004-1036 Perth):
Seven: 197,000
Nine: 184,000
ABC1: 151,000
TEN: 85,000 (12 – 12:30)
SBS ONE: 14,000 (Russian News)

  1. I really enjoyed nine’s coverage. Professional but also covered the personal story. Also they didn’t have it as ‘breaking news’ like seven did.

Ten Ten Ten, what were you doing on saturday morning!! One of ten’s huge disadvantages was they dont have a morning show they can use as a model, though neither does ABC and they managed to have decent coverage.
