Spartacus: Gods of the Arena: teaser

Here's a glimpse of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, the prequel to the Starz Network series Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

…and here’s your first glimpse of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, the prequel to the Starz Network series Spartacus: Blood and Sand featuring Australia’s Andy Whitfield (pictured).

The prequel will feature new and returning stars including John Hannah as Batiatus and Lucy Lawless as Lucretia. Dustin Clare was also recently announced. Whitfield will appear briefly. It won’t air in the US until January.

So far no Australian network, either Free to Air or Pay TV, has yet indicated it has picked up the Spartacus franchise.

UPDATE: GO! announces Spartacus: Blood and Sand for August.

Corrected.

  1. The only issue I had with it was the “swear word of the day” mentality of the script. One episode, every second line would include “c**k”. The next it would be the ‘c’ word. The next it would be “‘f-ing ‘c'”… It seemed very lazy in some respects. But all in all it was a job well done.

  2. What they should do is, during the production of the prequel and season 2, re shoot a bunch of new stuff. They wouldn’t have to do major stuff. There is no way you could really even re-edit a lot down unless they already had multiple versions of shots.

Take the crowd shots in the arena or even street shots, there’s always tits out all over the place. That’d be the harder stuff to get around. So just shoot some new shots with out nudity. Shows got to be cheep to do and just work it into the production schedule.

  3. Re: PG Version

TPTB have confirmed that they’re essentially re-editing the entire series for a lower rating. As opposed to simply cutting out material, they’ll be, for example, replacing shots of breasts with a close-up of the actor’s face or similar.

I loved the Starz version and I look forward to seeing the stuff that was apparently too risque for TV on the Blu-Ray version, but I also wouldn’t mind seeing the PG version which *may* be a better reflection of the actor’s thespian talents (as opposed to their hot bodies).

  4. Hell yeah! A little dusting up of the dialogue wouldn’t go amiss but I hope all of the key elements remain. I haven’t Quite seen enough of Andy Whitfield yet… 🙂

  5. Hey AJ, if you want the PG version Spartacus Blood and Sand, about all you will end up with is the credits LOL
It’s chockers with graphic sex and gory violence…of

  6. How can this show be given a PG rating. If it was to be shown on a TV network as is it would be rated R or MA with a few cuts. You would be talking a huge amount of cutting down to get a PG rating.

  7. Coolness! I can’t wait for the prequel and season 2!

I’d be happy to see the “PG” version of season 1 which is set to be shown in New Zealand (and other countries) on FTA in Australia, but if it doesn’t happen then I’ll be more than happy with season 1 on Blu-Ray.

It’s great that Andy Whitfield is doing so well and the few teases about the prequel from SDCC all sound great. The addition of Dexter’s psychotic arsonist girlfriend to the prequel is also great news.

  8. I read somewhere Seven had got the series, but I could be mistaken. Anyway, I have seen the entire first series and the last few episodes were gripping and intense. A great series- well worth a look.

  9. There was talk about channel 7 showing this on their 7Two digital channel. Andy Whitfield also mentioned that there would be a PG version of the show on Aussie TV. I run the Australian Spartacus site so that’s the latest that we have on there. The prequel goes into production in August and Season 2 follows immediately after.

  10. Looks like this is just clips of the Blood and Sand series! (Gods of the Arena being the title of the prequel). I wonder if it’s even entered production yet.

Anyway, the first season was so surprisingly great and entertaining I’ll definitely be watching this.

  11. So excited for this 🙂 I did hear a tentative release of Spartacus in November on Bluray and DVD for Australia, but that was a few months ago now. Especially because there has been no airing on Pay TV or Free to Air it could be pushed back much further.

  12. I’ve been watching Spartacus, and while initially i was put off at bad acting, bad production value, the show is terrific. Yes it gets bogged down in too much sex and nudity, but it actually is a pretty darn good show. The main flaw is, that the budget makes it lack in scope.

However the action and the scripts improve a lot as it goes on.

I can’t wait for this. Hopefully production value increases as the show grows and we can see more of the world out side the glimpse we get.

As for an aussie network, no problem with a cable network, but yeah a commercial network would never show it here in aus. Bit too graphic. The violence is stylised and good, but at times it’s almost fast cut softcore porn.
