Anna Coren reports live Hostage shoot-out

Former Today Tonight host Anna Coren had to take cover from M-16 fire while describing the hostage drama live on CNN.

Former Today Tonight host Anna Coren last night was reporting live from the Hostage Crisis in the Philippines for CNN.

Coren told viewers she was just 150 metres away from the scene, describing it live to viewers across CNN as it unfolded. She described the scene minute by minute, for more than an hour.

A Filipino SWAT team faced off against the gunman in a tense stand-off, with rifles drawn. Tear-gas followed.

The gunman, a dismissed Police Inspector who had been accused of a robbery and corruption, bailed up the hostages for more than 10 hours, but it took a turn for the worse last night.

At one stage Coren had to take cover from M-16 fire emanating from the bus.

She continued to report as a thunderstorm drenched the scene.

Of the 25 people who were hostage, 10 were freed and seven survived.

The drama was also broadcast live on ABC News 24 and SKY News.

Coren joined CNN in Hong Kong after quitting Seven.

  1. @Ashton, you may be right but what was CNN US showing at the time?, and i can bet you anything that more people were watching Fox News then CNN in the US, but yes like you were saying i would hope that next time something happens like this Fox News would take there sister network Sky News UK(which i also guess Sky News AU/NZ took) or even News Corp’s local india news channel(can not remember the name) even if its only for a few minutes an hour seeing fox i dont think would have any live reporters around that part of the world, but you carn’t expect them to have prime time coverage of it(i.e 90%)

  2. I love how when ever there is a major event happening, every single news channel was showing it live (SKyNews, CNN, BBC World News, CCTV, Al Jazeera) and Fox News showed like a minute of it baha. They care (Y)

  3. busy day for Anna. in the morning i saw her hosting her World Report show from Hong Kong, come the evening they sent her to Manila.
But [due to audio problems] did anyone notice that when she world say worlds that started with ‘s’ it sounded more like Kenny Sudcliff reading the odds out from Randwick.

  4. One of the most incredible things i’ve ever seen on television. Very sad for all involved. Props to ABC presenter for being able to ‘sum up’ the situation over and over for an hour, quite seamlessly, when really there was nothing more to say.

  5. I’m pleased the with the coverage that ABC News 24 provided of this situation tonight, the host of the World tried his best to keep people informed when unfortunately he didn’t really know more than I did watching at home. I’m glad someone on Free-to-Air covered it becuase I’m sure if it had been Seven they still would have been trying to find the Philippines on the map as the crisis ended.
