‘Bad boy’ sports stars for small screen

Shane Warne for Nine, Ben Cousins for Seven, according to media reports.

There are two separate reports today reiterating previously-reported television projects for sports stars.

One is Shane Warne’s light entertainment role with Nine, and the other is a documentary on Ben Cousins reportedly set for an airing on Seven.

The Sunday Herald Sun says David Gyngell finalised the deal for a show for Warne to air during the Ashes series on Thursdays at 9.30pm.

Nine’s cricket season will start on October 31st.

In June Warne said the show would draw upon his celebrity friends.

“(The idea) was why don’t you go and interview some of these guys – Mick Jagger, Chris Martin (Coldplay singer), Elton John, Michael Parkinson, Russell Crowe.

“All these guys have been around doing things for so long. What drives them? How did they get there? When did they know they were good? That’s the sort of show I want to do.”

The new show will be helmed by Glenn Pallister, formerly in charge of The Footy Show in Sydney.

No word on the ‘other TV project’ that had been described as “A reheat or revamp of an old favourite.”

Meanwhile the documentary following Ben Cousins’ return to AFL is reportedly due for a Seven screening across over two nights in primetime.

Filmed as far back as early 2009, TV execs who have seen it say it is profound and destined to win awards. Described as ‘raw and chilling’ it includes Cousins’ substance abuse and road to recovery.

Don’t be surprised if this one turns up in AFL Grand Final week.

  1. @dan.
Rather be a has been than a “never was”.
That said. I was never a big fan of warne. Sure when he was on the cricket field he was the best thing since slice bread. But behind the mic. Nah sorry pass.
But Then again. He was along side blokes who have had a lot of years to hone their skills. Anyway. I don’t think i will watch the show. Might give a go dunno. But good luck to him. His success or lack of, makes no difference in my life.

  2. Sounds like it will rate… And do you know what… If you don’t like it, don’t watch it… It’s called Free to Air for a reason…. If you wish to complain, do that about the ABC or SBS.. as you are paying for both of them…

Go and play scabble if you dont like it….

  3. I must say I am looking forward to the Ben Cousin’s documentary – I believe it will change how people think about him. It will be raw and compelling.

  4. Ronnie,

Regarding your comment “Hey Hey it’s Shane Warne. The scary part is that Nine execs think this is entertainment” – the really scary part is that there are people out there in tv land who actually watch and enjoy this type of offering.

  5. @Steven Guy: I think this will be good to watch in the same way that a pile-up on the freeway is good to watch. I just hope that Shane is able to emerge at the other end with all of his dignity intact. Oh, wait…

  6. haha, his celebrity friends! who cares!! He probably thinks they are his friends but they probably think he is a pest. I won’t be watching anything that has this idiot on it, he has to come to grips with the fact that he is has been.
