Carol Burnett for Glee?

More news from the Ryan Murphy camp on Carol Burnett, Cheyenne Jackson and Kristin Chenoweth.

Glee‘s Ryan Murphy sure has been a busy boy lately.

There’s practically a new piece of news on the show every second day. Season Two plans, Susan Boyle casting, Paul McCartney sending him songs, more Awards….. spare a thought for his overworked publicists.

The latest tidbits are that veteran Carol Burnett is being sought to play the mother of Sue Sylvester, which is a delicious idea to have her on screen alongside Jane Lynch. Pity anybody else sharing the same scene with these two -unless of course it is Sue’s older sister Jean who has Down syndrome (one of the show’s more inspired storyline ideas).

But E! Online notes their Glee sources indicate “there is no deal in place yet.”

Burnett most recently played an Emmy-nominated guest role in Law and Order: SVU as well as the role of Bree’s evil stepmother on Desperate Housewives in 2006.

30 Rock’s Cheyenne Jackson is also joining the cast of Glee in a major recurring role.

Meanwhile Ryan Murphy is also penning a musical series for Kristin Chenoweth, but it is not intended as a Glee spin-off.

“I’ve always wanted to do something for Kristin,” Murphy was quoted as saying. “Kristin is a good, close friend of mine obviously, so I’m writing a half-hour musical comedy specifically for Kristin because if you can sing like that, I want her to be the star of her own show where she sings. I can’t say too much about it yet. Kristin is so funny. I want it to be adult.”

  1. Lucille Ball & Carol Burnett represent, for me anyway, the greatest small screen comediennes – but I guess I have to keep Bea Arthur up there, Mary Tyler Moore, and people like Tracey Ullman and Chloris Leachman on the list. These women changed the faces and styles of comedic performance over the decades since tv comedies began with I love Lucy, and dare I forget Life with Elizabeth – with Betty White. Sorry, turned this into great iconic comediennes but news of CarolBurnett brings out the nostalgic in me.

  2. Best. Post. Ever!

As if I wasn’t a big enough Gleek already, now I’ve surely entered a new dimension of fanatacism.

Carol Burnett is a comedic genius and a cinematic icon. I’ll be holding my earlobes in the hope this comes to fruition….

  3. Carol can be such a great dramatic actress too..Can’t wait to see her in the role..she’s the best and such a favourite ..
But her comedic abilities are brilliant..she radiates such warmth when acting

  4. I can’t stand Carol Burnett at all! I wish it was Cloris Leachman playing her mother, would be a much better choice.
I was suprised by the character Jean with Down Syndrome, it was very unexpected, but do enjoy the scenes with the two sisters. It also shows a different side to Sue, which take awat the one dimensional character she could have been.
