Luke Jacobz is new X Factor host

Updated: Home and Away actor and former Popstars host Luke Jacobz is the new host of The X Factor while editors excise footage of Matt Newton.

Actor and personality Luke Jacobz is the new host of Seven’s The X Factor.

He was announced as replacement host on Today Tonight this evening.

It is the second time Jacobz has hosted a talent show, having fronted Popstars for Seven in 2004.

He has also been a regular on Home and Away since 2008 and was a cast member on McLeod’s Daughters from 2005 -2009. He also won Dancing with the Stars in 2008.

Jacobz, whose ‘nice guy’ image contrasts with that of Newton, said he got a surprise call from Channel Seven late last night asking him to think about taking on the hosting role.

A surprised Jacobz said of Newton, “I wish him all the best and hope I am going to do as good a job as he was going to do.”

Updated: The Australian reports that FremantleMedia began editing Newton out of footage at midnight on Sunday and will continue all week.

The show premieres next Monday.

  1. I think Luke Jacobz is a great bloke – he’s really genuine and not to mention easy on the eyes! But I agree he could do So much better than this drivel :/

  2. Poor move by 7 (although not as poor as choosing Matthew Newton in the first place).

McMullen (the guy who is wasted on Minute to Win it), or James Tobin would’ve been decent choices.

When will Channel 7 realise that most of their “big celebrities” simply don’t work. Tom Williams, Grant Denyer, Daniel McPherson, Luke Jacobz. They ruin shows.

  3. Nice guy, totally top bloke and well suited for the audience. Sadly the show itself it a turgid pile of stagnant codswallop. Jacobz can definitely do much better.

  4. @Clarence: not really. The cheap and cheerful way to do it is edit out all images of Newton, fill in the missing time with more images of participants of interest and/or extra commercial time; then get the new host to do voice over for the bootcamp and the auditions while hosting in front of a blue screen. If they do it properly you won’t even know Newton was there. Removing a host is much easier then removing a participant!

  5. @ Blogger – Since when was it a crime to dislike something? One of the things *I* find interesting in comments sections is how some people seem to think that negative opinions aren’t allowed, valid, reasonable, important etc.

And I assume you, unlike the ‘haters’, haven’t taken the time to enter a comment, it just materialised by itself, right?

  6. Last time a show was heavily edited at the last minute to remove a ‘performer’ (Biggest Loser), the show was all over the place for weeks. Hope this isn’t the case with X-Factor, although it’s going to be hard to smooth that one over when all of the auditions and boot camp are narrated and presented by the host!

  7. Still baffled why 7 has dumped Matt Newton. Isn’t that what they’re known for – hiring disgraced celebrities? On that, is Ben Cousins going to be the new host of the Great Race?

  8. didn’t even think of him but it’s not surprising.

i wish they picked a girl for this role, it’s sausage central ..

But i have to say, he is definitely better than matt, i was scratching my head the moment they announced him months back.

  9. Popstars Live was six years ago. I reckon he would have developed as a talent and as a human being since then which would help his confidence and personality. I say we wait until he starts hosting before we crucify him. Far out people, so much hate and negativity. How about some encouragement and support instead.

  10. @Chris- “Rubbish host for a rubbish show” ?!?
@Crap – “they get a rubbish host, why”
@John Jackson – “Not this guy!”

I find it interesting that you’ve already formed an opinion of a show that hasn’t aired yet. I also find it interesting that:

    a) you were enticed to read the article when the title of said article clearly states at least one of the things you ‘hate’, and

    b) after reading the article (I’ll give you the benifit of the doubt that you actually read it) you then took the time to enter a comment.

Hater’s in comments sections are such curious creatures, wouldn’t you agree?

  11. There is no place for someone who behaves like that on shows like X Factor. 7 had to drop him but should have doen it before this. I’m sure Lucky Luke will go very well. He is great talent.

  12. So TV’s bad boy is replaced with one of the nicest guys in TV?

I have worked on shows (as crew) with Luke. He is kind, courteous and an all-round professional. Good luck to him. I am pleased he has been given the chance.

He was incredibly young when he did Popstars Live. He has matured enormously and will prove himself no-end. Congrats Luke!

    You have the X-Factor!!

  13. I think Luke is a good choice. He was evidently popular in Dancing with the Stars and Home and Away, and despite Popstars Live being a dud, i thought he was a good host. You don’t need to be Einstein or Oprah to host this show! It is not about the host. I agree with Den, if they get rid of Bile Sandilands, i might watch.
