A documentary series about Waiting for Godot? Now that’s kinda ironic….

But this features Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart and Simon Callow so it’s definitely worthy of attention.

This insightful eight-part documentary series covers six exciting months in the life of London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket from all angles, in particular the arrival of a new artistic director – Sean Mathias, and the lead-up to his production of Waiting for Godot, – starring Ian McKellen – which recently toured Australia to rave reviews.

Along with Simon Callow and Patrick Stewart, the three giants of stage and screen came together in one of the most eagerly awaited theatrical events of 2009, and we follow its progress from rehearsals to opening night.

In this opening episode preparations begin on Waiting for Godot, with rehearsals and the first meeting of the three boys with the two star actors. Elsewhere in the theatre, carpenters Tony and James have to contend with a dressing room ceiling that’s about to fall down. But finally, the curtain goes up on the first preview night.

This premieres 8:30pm Sunday October 10 on ABC2.
