Audience Inventory: early trends

Early trends in TV Tonight's Audience Inventory show delayed starting times and too many ads on Pay TV are amongst the burning issues.

Votes have been pouring in for the TV Tonight Audience Inventory 2010.

Readers have been voicing their opinion on the state of the Aussie TV industry, the conduct of networks, programming and other issues.

In early trends, viewers don’t seem to be particularly offended by Violence, Sexual Content or Strong Language.

The most important issue in Pay TV so far is in having all the Free to Air channels made available to viewers.

Having less ads is also proving a hot topic.

– “I left Foxtel cause there were more promos & commercials than FTA! WTF? Foxtel is so lame it’s incredible.”

– “Make it no ads on Foxtel.”

In Free to Air the burning issue so far in results is networks failing to finish a series once it starts. Starting / Finishing shows on time is also polling strongly.

– “I just wish shows would start when they are scheduled to start.”

– “My main problem with FTA tv is the lack of commitment to running series – Dexter, Monk, Nurse Jackie etc etc.”

– “I want honesty not flowery bullshi** Programmes that are advertised must start on time and play the whole series through from 1st ep to last (in order) and do not stick a repeat in every 3rd week.”

– “Programming execs are terrible at giving viewers their programs on time, and the full run.”

– “Not starting on time and not finishing show once they’ve started needs to stop. Getting better with multi channels. Main channels should be in hd, though/”

– “Frustrating when shows do not start or finish on time and do not consider viewers want tyo watch other channels. This screams arrogance and disrespect for the viewers.”

– “Rarely watch FTA due to too many ads, on screen clutter, squeezing credits, pop up ads, Foxtel has none of this and thats why I love it.”

– “It seems that the channels are not listening to the viewers are surprised when their shows dont get the viewers they want. I dont blame people from watching overseas shows other ways.”

– “After The Gruen Transfer finishes, I may as well unplug the aerial.”

If you want to cast your vote, you have until next Monday. There are 27 questions which take around 10 minutes to complete.

  1. Gee Craig for someone who doesn’t “work for Foxtel” you certainly make them sound better than they are – “Some of the Foxtel channels may have a few ads,but remember not all of them do”. When did 7 or so become a few? I always thought a few was 3 maybe 4. Half a dozen or so would be more correct. Yes they have commercial free movies and sport isn’t too bad, but have you ever tried watching a documentary on Foxtel, you get 7 minutes of show, then 3 minutes of the same promo’s and adds. It’s really hard to get into a serious doco with the constant interuptiions, thus you have no choice but to record and make use of the fast forward button.

  2. Interesting responses there
1.Andy did you know that you can have access to FTA channels through Foxtel,i would have thought for you that was well worth it
2.Some of the Foxtel channels may have a few ads,but remember not all of them do.The Movie channels are never interupted,Foxsports AFL goes right through each quarter with no ads. There is also a handful of channels that only have a couple then go straight back to the show.Foxtel is great at letting you know what time FTA stations are starting there shows for example off the top of my head a couple of weeks ago Packed To the Rafters start time was 8.42PM.As soon it was that time it started.Perhaps some of you that get annoyed by start and finish times perhaps get yourselves the Foxtel basic problem solved. No i don’t work for Foxtel always like to post up a positive response

  3. @freddy:
I don’t think the charges of fraud and misleading advertising exist in this country.
The people in 2 federal electorates just voted for independent candidates and now find that they have actually voted for Labor! WTF?
Surely those two pollies have committed fraud and there’s no doubt that their pre-election advertising was misleading! Charge them I say!

Re the TV companies – they could care less about our opinions, unfortunately.
People continue to tune in no matter how bad the service is, so why would they bother to improve it? We have to vote with our feet (or rather our remotes).
This week I saw advertised in the newspaper several movies on SBS which looked good. However I won’t be watching them – I don’t watch movies which have ad breaks. Never ever will. Hardly watch SBS at all these days, since ads were put within programs. My loss, they could care less.

  4. @johnjet, your right if Foxtel dropped the adds the price would go up, but they could drop or at least heavily reduce all the promo’s. How many times can they drum the same promo into us? How many times have you watched a program and seen the same promo in every add break? That is mine numbing. If it wasn’t for the IQ (i.e. record programs and fast forward the add breaks) i’d have dropped Foxtel some time ago.

PS. I’d be happy to pay a lot more for Foxtel channels that ran commercial and promo free and were in HD.

  5. My biggest issue with teh stations is teh continued discrimiantion towards deaf viewers, especially with the extra new channels and programs that was captioned previously but not now (Seinfield comes to mind)

Also, the live captioning which does not work very well indeed. In fact it is much worse than 10 years ago.
