Dallas sequel proceeds to Pilot

A Dallas sequel will focus on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers JR and Bobby Ewing.

Last year it was announced that a new take on Dallas was in the pipeline by US cable network TNT, but there wasn’t much clarity on the form it might take.

The initial idea was said to have the series revolve around J.R. and Sue Ellen’s son John Ross and Bobby and Pam’s adopted son Christopher, but the studio and the network were waiting for writer Cynthia Cidre’s take on the Ewing clan and wanted to read her script before proceeding.

Now it has been approved for a Pilot, confirming it will focus on the two boys as its centre -a better solution than attempting a remake.

A Press Release detailed the following: Executive producer Cynthia Cidre, writer of the acclaimed film The Mambo Kings and creator/executive producer of the TV series Cane, has crafted an update of the long-running series about the Ewings of Southfork, whose betrayals, jealousies and passions have made them famous. The story focuses on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers JR and Bobby Ewing, who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance. This project, based upon the iconic series created by David Jacobs, comes to TNT from Warner Horizon Television.

If it proceeds beyond its Pilot it will become the second series spin-off from the original, following Knots Landing.

TNT also approved pilots for crime procedural Perception (formerly Proof) and an untitled project from Allan Loeb (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps).

  1. I loved Dallas in its day – but could it really work in 2011? Larry Hagman and the deliciously silly plots kept it alive through all those heady seasons in the 80’s. I am not convinced, unless they wheel the old guys back – let’s face it Victoria Principal and Linda Gray probably look younger now than in 1991 when it ended.

  2. Loved Dallas one of my all time favorite soaps, only surpassed by its spin off Knots Landing (which ran for an incredible 13 seasons if I’m correct). However they will have to amp up the sex and nudity for it to work today.

  3. @Rhys the dream year was one full season. They also dealt with Bobby’s death on it’s sister soap Knots Landing, which couldn’t cancel everything as just a dream, so I don’t think they had anymore crossovers after that.

  4. but have they sold it to an Australian channel yet ? Wonder when it will start here…
Wonder how long I will be wondering. I remember hearing there would be a movie but a new series is a much better idea.

  5. @Barrie – my memories of the original Dallas are very similar. It was one of the first ‘grown up’ shows I remember watching regularly, and in the pre-internet days the ‘who shot JR’ hook was surely one of the best ever. But alas, the show did lose some of its allure following the Bobby wakes up from a dream after (what was it) two years?

  6. Will be interesting to see what its like.

No doubt some of the original performers will pop up in cameos – although some of them are getting on a bit now – but would be good seeing them again all the same.

  7. This was one of my favourite shows of the 1980’s, and it was very popular in its day. shown in 90 countries – “Who Shot JR?” reveal ep had 90 million US viewers. I would be more likely to watch this revival than if it were a remake. No-one could replace JR Ewing or Miss Ellie (not even Donna Reed) It jumped the shark for me when in one season they replaced Barbara Bell Geddes with Donna Reed, Bobbie died, and evil villan Angelica Nero looked like she belonged in Dynasty. Then the season ended with Bobbie appearing in the shower alive and well and Pam saying it was all a dream. Once Sue Ellen left and JR remarried a young blonde who had an illegitamate Son it was unrecognisable for me and I gave up on it.

  8. Havent seen the original to young for that but if the pilot is good enough then it should get the green light. Dallas has been off air for over 20 years i think i new version could work providing the pilot is good.
