Erinsborough turns up the heat

Spoiler: Neighbours will be pushing more boundaries on Eleven, but it won't be turning into Big Brother.

Spoiler: Neighbours Executive Producer Susan Bower has dropped a few hints on 2011 storylines and how the new PG rating on Eleven might open up new terrain for the long running soap.

She told the Herald Sun that while the show will be pushing more boundaries it will still retain its heart.

“I don’t intend to turn any characters into crack addicts or have an 18th birthday party where everybody takes ecstasy and gets paralytic drunk,” she says.

“We can’t lose what we’ve got and that is that families like to watch Neighbours together.

“The Brits love us just the way we are.”

Amongst upcoming storylines, a tragic accident will affect the lives of Stephanie and Lyn Scully (Carla Bonner and Janet Andrewartha), there will be a life threatening illness and Lucas (Scott Major) has a brush with the dark side.

There will also be a fire on the street.

“Through a series of accidents Ramsay Street burns and it will put lives in danger,” Bower says.

Somebody might want to tell the good folk of Pin Oak Court to pack away their combustibles.

  1. Sometimes when a producer runs a TV show into the ground they get replaced … what’s the deal here, Neighbours?

Meanwhile, maybe check out a few British soaps. Sure. they’re all miserable, but they aren’t afraid to do heavy storylines. Okay, Neighbours should never be heavy, but it would be nice if it contained some actual drama.

  2. They need to go one way or the other…

Either keep going down the path they are now, add a talking dog and finish every show with “And I would have got away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids!”

    Or

Get some decent writers in, employ a few decent actors and have some decent story lines!

  3. Full marks for The Simpsons shark jumping references.

Have no fear, we’ll have stories for years, like
    Susan becomes a robot,
Maybe Lyn gets a cell phone, has Lou ever owned a bear?
Or, how ’bout a crazy wedding?
Where something happens and doo doo doo doo doo…

Street fire… again? Surely the writers have a disaster chart with each of the characters names and what has happened to them. What’s next, Karl cheats? Susan gets amnesia? Libby’s future husband falls of a horse and dies and she’s left with a son who can’t act to save his life?

P.s when the hell are they going to kill Paul like they promised? His vegetable acting is insulting. As Catherine Deveny put it “Stefan Dennis as the mustache-twirling panto villain Paul Robinson, is a genius. I just wanted to yell out ‘He’s behind you, he’s behind you!’ It takes sheer brilliance to be able to act that badly.”

  4. Southern Cross 10 will sooner or later will have to cave into viewers demands and launch launch 11 in regional area’s at the same time as metro area’s to give it’s viewers the chance to see the 1st episode of Neighbours in 2011.

Cmon SC 10 don’t leave us behind like you did with One HD.

  5. The only thing that needs to change is the storytelling, and the motivation for the storytelling.

Create and delve into contemporary issues that affect people of the age groups in neighbours (teens, 30somethings, 50somethings etc) and maybe not wrap everything up at the end of the arc. Have repercussions.

Also try and break out of character stereotypes (the naughty teen in Natasha, the Juno-esque Summer, the bad boy Andrew etc) and create characters that can do both good and bad things and not be marked by their behaviour.

And, this might cause a backlash, but it’s time to rest some characters who have been on their so long. Actually, if I were in charge, in the move to channel 11 I would completely revamp the cast of Neighbours, and even the Ramsey Street setting. Have a whole new suburb full of characters of different cultural and economic backgrounds, more a melting pot. A new mythology, a new history.

They wouldn’t of course, but they need to grow up a bit.

  6. Well Im glad Neighbours is catering to families, Neighbours is a 3 generations show, rather than just teens.

The next family that will ever move into Ramsay Street should be a family link to Lou Carpenter, a legend that him needs to be used a lot more on screen.

  7. Fire in Ramsay Street through a serious of accidents.

Ramsay Street start putting Pink Batts in there homes don’t they, en masse they’ve hired a firm to do all the homes at once and unknown to the residents the Company is not training employees on proper procedures.

  8. Maybe she has finally realised that viewers watched and enjoyed Neighbours as a family and that all the emphasis on teen stories turned older viewers away and they took the younger viewers with them.
@par3182, if you want to watch teenagers taking ecstasy, then watch a niche program like Skins.

  9. lol. ” we can’t loose what we’ve got” . You have got nothing susan, have you seen your ratings in the past yr???
I would love to see a party where there is a riot or something, people get bashed, windows smashed and so on.
