New Amazing Race challenge

A new challenge is added to The Amazing Race: the Express Pass.

A new season of The Amazing Race begins on Thursday night, just a few days after its season premiere in the US (Monday).

With it comes a new challenge to be known as the Express Pass.

Host Phil Keoghan, who is still a strong tip to front the Aussie version, said such changes are for the better.

“It livens up the show and keeps everyone on their toes, especially for a show that’s been on as long as ours. This is a tool that teams can use to help themselves stay in the race and it’s something from the beginning that gives them an extra incentive to race really hard right out of the gate.

“It rewards the team that does well, but unlike the Fast Forward, its impact is not for one leg. It has an effect on the entire race.”

Meanwhile, he also spoke about which team might become the season’s villains.

“I’m going to leave that for the audience to judge, but there definitely are teams where people are going to be like, “Aw, man, I can’t stand this team” or “I can’t believe they did what they did.” I think it’s important to have those teams — those who are maybe overly confident and get knocked down a few pegs when they see how tough the race is. Or they made assumptions about other teams and find themselves in a situation where they’re humbled.

“There’s always a honeymoon period in the beginning where everyone’s trying to be nice, but as the race goes on, it settles in and you have to do whatever it takes to win.”

Survivor, which premieres on Nine on Tuesday, also has a new change to the gameplay with the Medallion of Power.

  1. @ Peter, I wouldn’t hold my breath on the new season being in the widescreen format. But surely Seven will air the The Amazing Race Austraila in widescreen next year.
@ Andrew just checked the wikipedia website and the express pass goes to the team that finishes first in leg one. It has the potential to help that team if it’s in trouble. The Express Pass can be used at any point during the first eight legs of the race to allow that team to skip any challenge and move on. It sounds like it would make it hard for that team to be eliminated anytime soon unless they really stuff up, and for those people who do not want to know which team finishes first and which finishes last in the first episode don’t go on to the CBS or wikipedia websites for the next few days!!

  2. Let’s hope this series of The Amazing Race is broadcast in widescreen format in Australia. Surely a show like this that visits such spectacular locations around the world is just begging to be shown in the wider format. Can anyone tell me what it hasn’t been broadcast in widescreen in Australia in the past? You would think it would be aired in widescreen in the US!
