Oprah news travels around the world

Media across the globe were spinning the Aussie surprise that Oprah Winfrey announced to her audience.

Media went nuts yesterday for the news that Oprah is headed our way in December.

It was the talk of radio, as well as being featured on a number of TV shows. That’s the kind of pulling power the Big O has. Doubly so in the US.

Her announcement was picked up by USA Today, BBC News, Philadelphia Inquirer, Scottish Daily Record, The Mirror, Washington Post, Philippine Star, Los Angeles Times, Vancouver Sun, Entertainment Weekly, Forbes, Telegraph, CNN, Daily Mail, CBS News, ABC News, Chicago Tribune, and more…

It’s the kind of TV surprise that will be as memorable as the words “You get a car! You get a car! You get a car!”

You can watch the episode today at 1pm on TEN.

Tourism Australia is expecting the shows will help boost tourism numbers above the 6.2 million already expected to arrive next year, which will itself be an increase of 4.9 per cent on this year’s expected 5.9 million.

Meanwhile, ticketing for the 2 shows from the Sydney Opera House forecourt will be finalised by Harpo Productions next month, with fans to log their interest online on a date to be advised.

The 3000 seats will include the 300 viewers she will bring with her from the US.

  1. To Mary: Tickets will be free… I’d say watch Oprah’s interview with Angela Bishop on Ten News/7PM Project. Also look on the Oprah website on Network Ten 🙂

  2. The whining’s already started here in the West that Oprah’s not coming to our wonderful state! Though it’s amusing seeing pollies trying to be enthused about a talkshow host. They’re scrabbling over themselves to get on board what’s bound to be a boon for the tourist spots the program visits.

  3. Far from being a “genius idea” it’s about as dumb as they come. At $3m dollars it’s beyond stupid. Oprah’s audience are the absolute worst demographic for Australian tourism from the USA. We need cashed up, upper-middle class tourists, Oprah’s audience are mostly unemployed working class and poor retired women.

We should be going after the Silicon Valley/Wall street millionaires and billionaires, not the wives of laid off auto workers and Florida retirees worried about their nest eggs! They’ll never come to Australia, they can’t afford it. American unemployment is currently running at nearly 10%, their economy is catatonic, the middle class in the US is almost extinct. They sure don’t have the dosh to fly down here and spend up big, we need to go after the upper-middle classes, those who can still afford to holiday overseas. Oprah won’t do that, no one with enough brains to have a good enough job to be able to come to Australia watches her show.

We should have paid Jon Stewart or Steven Colbert to come to Australia!

  4. I watched the episode at 1 just to see the announcement. Had to wait 50 minutes while they went through stories about the loyal viewers. Its nice that Oprah is taking her viewers that have been loyal for ages and really value the show and not just blow in for there first time on the show.

But my god there audience gets hystrical. They were in tears in the 1st 5 minutes of the show and nothing had been said. Then building up to the announcement the audience were standing up sitting down then cried. What a nice surprise for them though. I hope they enjoy there trip.

  5. It was an amazing episode!!! Great surprises and very sweet moments! My favourite was the part where some fans were driven through the fake car park and straight on to the show!!! The Paul Simon performance was also very beautiful.

  6. Only $1.5M to sign up oprah? I’m surprised that those that run the victorian handball league didn’t think of the idea sooner. Much cheaper then Hunt/Falou. Doesn’t matter if she cant play, neither can Hunt/Falou.

  7. hey david with all the hype surrounding her upcoming visit between now and December have you considered adding as a sticky thread ?… I like coming here and seeing all the new posts you update us on that doesn’t relate to the Big O !!
