Blokes rule as Seven wins Week 40

By David Knox on October 3, 2010 / Filed Under News 31

Almost 2.68m viewers watched Collingwood thrash St. Kilda yesterday in the AFL Grand Final rematch, less than the audience who watched the draw. But without an NRL game on Saturday, this time the network had a big win for the night and it has taken out Week 40 in ratings.

The more interesting story is the result for 7mate and GEM in their first week on the air.

7mate took a 2.2% share ahead of GEM’s 1.4%, making it the third most viewed digital channel behind GO! and 7TWO. It bodes well for the blokey Seven channel with a new episode of Family Guy (163,000) as its top offering of the week. GEM’s best was a Monday night movie The Fugitive (113,000).

saddens me that the top rating non sports paytv programs are usually 70’s britcoms.

  2. Donald October 5, 2010 at 2:38 am -

But the advertisers already get this information in the daily figures (same place I got the individual figures for Gruen and F1). They don’t need it in the “top 100 shows” as well. For this to be literally the top 100 shows, it’s needs to combine the different time-slots together for the same show. As it is, it’s really a top 100 time-slots, not top100 shows (comes from a paradigm that pre-dates multi-channels). That’s all I’m saying.

  3. Secret Squïrrel October 4, 2010 at 3:07 pm -

@Donald – I understand where you’re coming from but the lists are not made so that fans can see how their favourite show is doing. They’re to assist advertisers in determining where and when to buy advertising time. This is obviously moot for the Gruen Transfer, but combining the figures from both One and Ten for the F1 would conceal which might be the better option for running an ad.

The reasoning is similar to why I think they should not be combining channel ratings into overall network shares.

  4. Donald October 4, 2010 at 11:36 am -

Hi David. :-) I know you don’t create the list, which is why it was more of a comment than a request. Just expressing a longing that they would create the list like that, as the paradigm has shifted in the last few years, and things like Gruen and F1 are getting short-changed on their deserved place in the list due to the audience being split over more than 1 channel (Ten-One, ABC1-ABC2) and not getting combined. 241,000 for the “repeat” of Gruen on ABC2 is a very impressive figure! Shame it wasn’t added to the 1.4M of the ABC1 showing. Thanks again for the feedback you provide to us all here. :-)

  5. JB October 4, 2010 at 11:00 am -

Kinda agree with Mandy there David. I preferred it when you had the first comments at the top of the page and then scrolled down. Don’t know why you changed it.

  6. David Knox October 4, 2010 at 2:04 am -

It probably has a different coding (ie Gruen Transfer rpt). But the bottom line is I don’t create the list.

  7. Donald October 4, 2010 at 2:01 am -

I know this is probably just the way it’s done now, but for the top 100 shows I’d like to see all showings combined. e.g. The 241,000 that The Gruen Transfer got on Thursday night on ABC2 has Not been added to it’s Wednesday night ABC1 1.4M figure in this list, making a difference between #7 (if combined) and #11 (just the premiere showing). Ditto for F1, which isn’t far off cracking the top 100 if you combine figures for Ten and One. Surely in this multi-channel age we should be combining the figures from the different showings for the top 100 list.

It sounds like they haven’t switched back from the NRL broadcast.

Has Nine run out of material for GEM after only a week? It seems to have disappeared from the airwaves tonight and Nine HD is back on. Is this the shortest lived channel ever???

  10. Mozzie October 3, 2010 at 11:19 pm -

I’d like to know what has happened to GEM tonight. 90 has gone back to being 9HD.

  11. Victor October 3, 2010 at 10:55 pm -

TEN and ONE HD should be awarded the rights for the 2014. 2016, 2018 and 2020 olympics games if they do a fantastic job for Broadcasting the Delhi Commonwealth games.

FJ. read my post champ. i wonder how many pubs would have had the a so called oz tam ticker ngoing for ratings than.i am not tipping many pubs do

  13. Mandy October 3, 2010 at 9:41 pm -

Why do the comments on this site go from bottom to top? It makes no sense. Every other blog has comments going from the top of the page to the bottom, which allows you to scroll down the page easily. This format is dumb!

  14. chris October 3, 2010 at 9:01 pm -

im not sure if theresany truth to this but i was told the gfwas it not in hd due to seven having to share equipment with the other networks?

  15. Chris October 3, 2010 at 8:35 pm -

To those knocking Ten’s AFL coverage…have another look. Ten is probably the best sports broadcastrer in this country. When they use to have the V8s it was excellent, their AFL coverage is good and their cycling coverage today was supreme. I am sure their commonwealth games cover age will be excellent. Personally looking forward to it. I love wall to wall ocverage of major sporting events…no matter what they are.

  16. Peter A October 3, 2010 at 7:59 pm -

    @ Darren,

While a respect your point of view, I have to disagree. 7 should be ashamed of them self for not showing the GF replay in HD, especially considering the rubbish that was being offered on 7mate. Shame Shame Shame!!! Then they missed the first free kick of the match when Collingwood was about to shoot their first goal, only to come back from a replay to see the ball in St Kilda’s hands, and what is with the camera behind the goal during live play?? Just like the V8 supercar coverage, they just don’t “do it” for me. Personally I don’t see the issues with channel 10 coverage of the AFL. Over all, the 7 coverage was ok. The main thing is, Collingwood won :-)

Rush is on the rise again and i somehow feel proud of it in the last few weeks…Go Rush!!! Hang in there my dear friend, lol

Three words for you 7mate…. The. A. Team

    You had me at hello.

  19. Ja'mie October 3, 2010 at 4:58 pm -

7mate has been a lot better than I expected. Very impressed with the lineup most nights, I probably watch it more than any other channel now.

  20. effdee October 3, 2010 at 4:27 pm -

We don’t get 7mate here in Tasmania yet, anyone know when we do get it???

  21. Leigh October 3, 2010 at 4:25 pm -

I have enjoyed the first week of 7mate and I am a female

  22. steven guy October 3, 2010 at 3:27 pm -

7bloke surprised me, some good docos and some good sci fi. Gem, not much there for me except the odd movie. My topfield set top recorder magic box thingy is getting a real work out now but I am afraid it will die of fright when Ten starts it’s 11 station !

  23. yeah October 3, 2010 at 3:16 pm -

GEM and 7Mate – very weak channels

  24. tomothy October 3, 2010 at 3:07 pm -

With Eleven launching next year, I wonder if Ten will start coming in second in Network totals now and again. Their new chanel will be showing the content everyone has been asking for for the last three years. It will be a success, I’m sure… unless they have been holding out too long and people have already seen the content by other means. I know I have.

  25. Guy October 3, 2010 at 2:38 pm -

Seven had a good week and they won it fair and square. Seven easily won the primary channels and Nine finally gets what’s coming to it. The last couple of weeks they had NRL to anchor their Saturdays but now without any football in primetime it just shows how ahead of the game Seven is when football isnt around. It was shown in the last 10 weeks of 2009 and it will happen again in the last 8 weeks of 2010.

I am tipping big things from TEN this week. I think they will take the week. People seem to be underestimating the power of the Commonwealth Games. I think they could average anywhere between 1.5-2m each night. Sure there has been controversy but these are the 2nd biggest meet for sport behind the Olympics for Australians.

Obviously being on so late tonight with the Opening Ceremony wont help and Nine does have the Rugby League GF but i think TEN will take it. If i am wrong them i’ll be gobsmacked.

  26. Darryn October 3, 2010 at 2:03 pm -

Having 6 months or so to plan a grand final, one expects the afl and the channel viewing to do a good job, considering one week was all the afl and 7 had to get this huge sporting event together, they both should be congratulated on a fantastic job. It also points out why channel 10 should never be given any sort of rights to the AFL, the coverage they have provided has been mediocre at best. Now if only they could get the “live” issue sorted out…….

  27. moo cow October 3, 2010 at 1:52 pm -

Wow, ABC is really closing in on Ten there.

  28. Mr. chandler October 3, 2010 at 1:17 pm -

i thought they would have got more viewers to watch the gf replay. but i suppose this take into account all the pubs and all the gf parties

  29. Ronnie October 3, 2010 at 12:52 pm -

There needs to be crisis meetings at Nine starting now otherwise next year this pathetic 21.6 share for their primary channel will be their new normal. Anyone can pick up hit US shows but if they can’t commission successful Australian content across every genre they’re in the wrong business. Progammers need taste and courage, not just clever moves – it’s not enough anymore.
