Here's a glimpse at what ABC's new dramedy Rake has in store, ahead of its launch in early November.

Here’s a glimpse at what ABC’s new dramedy Rake has in store.

Richard Roxburgh plays barrister Cleaver Greene.

His ex-wife may call him ‘unreliable’, his son will call him ‘a mate’. To his learned friends at the bar table he is ‘a real wag’, and to most judges he is ‘an outrage’. To the Tax Office, he is ‘a defendant’, to a certain brothel owner ‘a legend’, and to his former cocaine dealer ‘a tragic loss’.

The clients he loves the most – the cases that thrill him – are those that appear to be utterly hopeless. He will do whatever it takes to defend and save life’s truly lost souls. The big sinners. Its drug lords. Its cannibals. Its bestialites. And at the same time, he will struggle to save himself, to stop himself falling back into the abyss that has characterised most of his self-destructive adult life thus far.

It begins 8:30pm Thursday November 4th but a sneak preview will be available from 8:30pm October 31st on iVIEW.

  1. It feels like the usual Andrew Knight middle-class, middle aged angst. Charming but flawed barrister making a mess of everything, but doing well on his feet in court. It will be as deep as a puddle.

  2. Admittedly it’s an assumption that they wish to portray the main character as a “lovable rogue” ie despite his obvious flaws, part of his heart is in the right place…
else the character is indeed likely to be horribly obnoxious.

I have a sinking feeling about this whole premise… ho hum…

  3. AJay, who brings the charm?

The adverts look really obnoxious. Basically it is Richard Roxburgh playing virtually the same character as he usually does and hogging all the screen time, as he usually does, but with his name next to the producer title.

It looked like a poorly executed farce.

So I guess this brings ABC’s total for episodic television drama to a whopping 16 hours. Pretty shameful.
