Red Faces over Hey Hey camera shots

Updated: Singer Ella Hooper accuses Hey Hey of "paedophilic" camera shots which Nine concedes was "ill-chosen" during the rapid demands of Live TV.

Hey Hey it’s Saturday has come under fire over its Red Faces segment again.

But this time it wasn’t the act so much as the close-up camera shots that were used.

Guest judge Ella Hooper, formerly of Killing Heidi, criticised camera shots of an act featuring three under-age girls wearing country and western attire.

As the girls swayed to their song there were close-ups of their backsides.

Hooper said, “Well I was loving the plaid, and respectful of wearing such short shorts on such a cold, rainy night, and I’m of the country persuasion myself, I’m a country girl, so I thought there were a lot of pro’s.

“Only possible con was the camera choice shots at the start, but that’s not your fault.”

While the moment passed without further incident, Hooper saved her real criticism for later when Daryl Somers asked her if the camera shots for the third act, a firewalker, were an improvement.

“It was far less paedophilic,” she said in part, drawing an audible reaction in the studio.

Some viewers agreed with Hooper’s remarks with comments left on Twitter:

Whoever is in the control room for #redfaces on #heyhey should be fired. At least #ellahooper didnt let it slide.

Glad Ella Hooper made the paedophilia crack on Red Faces – I thought it was bloody tasteless direction #HeyHey.

Huge mistake – turned tv on & #heyhey was on. 1st act on Red Faces was 3 underage girls in daisy dukes w/ camera zoomed in on their butts..

kudos to Ella for speaking up about the outrageous camera shots during Red Faces on hey hey of young girls behinds. thanks Ella.

ouch – hey hey’s red faces camera work = Epic Fail………….

The shorts could have been longer, but the girls on Red Faces weren’t skanky/inappropriate. The shot of their a*ses – THAT was inappropriate.

Anyone C the camerawork #fail on #heyhey last night? Dear GTV9, Please don’t make me a pedophile & zoom in on 12yo girls asses.

Last year Hey Hey it’s Saturday came under fire after its now-infamous “blackface” skit in which a parody of the Jackson Five drew comment from Harry Connick Jr. on air, and attracted international headlines.

Live television choices continue to come under scrutiny after the ABC was criticised last week for Q & A including a Twitter remark encouraging a show to be thrown at former PM John Howard.

UPDATED Nov 1st: A Nine Spokesperson today told TV Tonight, “Hey Hey it’s Saturday is a live program, with hundreds of directorial decisions made in rapid succession. The camera angle in question was ill-chosen, however any offence caused was completely unintentional.”

    1. They were the claims of one guest not necessarily of this site. Therefore it’s TV news and it would be remiss not to include a link to let people make up their own mind. I would not post a clip here I felt was padeophilic.

  1. Ella was out of line, Especially her comments after the 3rd act. She said her piece there was no need to answer Daryl’s question like she did. She has just crisiticised the show for being pedopholic. On National TV of an audience of around 1 million people. She should apologise to everyone, the set, Daryl and the Australian audience for her comments! Un-called for! Without any of her comments this issue would never of blown out like it did.

She knew what was going on, where the acts take place there is no tv sets, so she delibrately looked at a screen knowing what shots may of occoured. So she is bad as anyone else, she looked and had the impression it was a pedophile look. So it makes her look bad!

She’s a fool, I am sure she has created a few of her fans to dislike her because of this. Good way to keep your fans happy! I certainly do not like her anymore. I saw the act and never thought for a moment like she did. She has created news on something that should not of happened. These poor girls have been embarassed because of Ella’s comments! She owes an entire apology to everyone involved including the girls.

I wonder what would happen if these girls seeked legal advice to sue Ella, now I’d like to see that! And while it’s ocouring Daryl can happily say on air she is being sued for her comments. A win for the show!

Ella is a fool! *slams the door*

  2. Ok maybe there was an error in camera angle, what Id like to know where were these girls parents?? Im no old fuddy duddy but sorry what those little girls were wearing ie short shorts, was inappropriate. Not to mention Ella Hoopers comment about them being so “brave” for wearing them in freezing cold weather, kind of immaterial dont you think?

  3. One person makes a small mistake now its all over the internet media

can someone (david) remove this story now.
what people do to get hits on a web site

I love to know what people are thinking about Australia overseas

  4. Oh and while I’m on it,

Yes the camera shot was bad, but it all boils back to the kids parents. There were 200 people in the audience, where were they looking??? Ella complemented them for turning up in “such short, shorts”. Now I don’t think that’s being a very good role model either is it?

  5. @stephen.

    Don’t be smart.
Hey Hey is quality entertainment that Deserves to be on TV. If it ever gets taken off the air again, there will be nothing worth watching, and I know who to blame for that too.

  6. How come noone makes a fuss about 15 year old gymnasts in all kinds of positions on live tv. You dont want our young gymnasts to walk out wearing bourqua’s do you?
