Report: Teri Hatcher plans Desperate Housewives exit

Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher is to quit her role in the show at the end of the next season.

London’s Daily Mail newspaper has reported Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher is to quit her role in the show at the end of the next season.

Hatcher, who plays mother Susan Mayer, has reportedly got her eyes set on her own show and looks to Courteney Cox’s success with Cougar Town.

An insider says, “She has another production deal in the pipeline and she is in the early stages of developing a sitcom that she wants to start work on immediately after she finishes Desperate Housewives – she wants a new show in time for the mid-January pilot season.”

The show’s creator, Marc Cherry, signed a deal with ABC Studios last October which gave the show a stay of execution for two years providing that its leading cast members, including Hatcher, Eva Longoria Parker and Felicity Huffman, remained happily onboard. But all three will be out of contract after the next season.

Huffman is also said to be leaving, which would create a bigger question about whether the show can -or should- continue.

“Teri has been inspired by the success of people like Courteney Cox, who walked away from Friends and bagged her own prime-time show, Cougar Town,” said the source.

“She says she had an amazing run on the show but feels it is time to move on to a project that she has more control over.”

Hatcher has recently filmed an appearance for Smallville.

A spokesperson for ABC said: “We are working on the next season at the moment and we haven’t got anything to say about the one after.”

Being a Sunday there isn’t much additional comment from the US yet. Watch this space.

  1. Digital Spy reports “Teri Hatcher denies ‘Housewives’ exit”. She said on her Facebook page that it was a lie, and she is awaiting an apology. I guess there still may be more to this story.

  2. Tha main cast are signed for 7 seasons. It wouldn’t be affordable to resign
them, as they’d each understandably want higher payment. They could do
a spinoff show, with new, cheaper actors.

  3. “walked away from Friends…”
after 10 seasons Friends Ended… and 4-5 years later Cougar Town started.
    lol

anyway, i doubt Desperate Housewives is gonna go further then next season so i think she’s fine.

  4. for what its worth I think alot of Teri for doing that Smallville episode, there is no reason in the world for her to do it, yet she has done it. As someone who grow up watching Lois & Clark… I feel its a nice jesture on her part.

  5. I thing another 2 season should do it, especially if you have 2 of the 4 leading ladies going.

And an appearance on Smallville, given her connection with the last Superman TV show that should be something.

What I want to know is didn’t Seven promise to fast track the show this season?

  6. I think this show is well past its prime, so she’ll probably leave as soon as she can get out of her contract. All the ladies on this show have had a good run with it, time to move on i think!

  7. Until i hear it from Teri herself i don’t like speculating. Even Seven featured it this morning and even said Felicity Huffman was also looking at leaving. Sorry but that person from the Brisbane paper is just stirring i think.

I actually believe that maybe its the best time to wrap the series up after the 2011/12 season. I mean its a good hard slog afterall. Its better to go out on a high rather than on a low and all these cast changes if this were to happen.

However in saying this Desperate Housewives is ABC’s #2 drama behind Grey’s Anatomy and comes in at #4 behind Modern Family, DWTS and Greys so it would hurt ABC thats for sure. Guess time will tell.

  8. OK well I just read this story somewhere else, but if you’re saying it’s from the UK’s Daily Mail then i don’t believe it. The Daily Mail sits at the end when playing chinese whispers and then reports what is heard as fact. Notice how they only ever say “the source” and that “she says” without actually getting direct word from Teri Hatcher.

  9. Will be sad to see to go. I think its quality dipped in Season 2 but has been consistently good viewing ever since. However its had a good run and I would rather see it end on top rather than pushing on without half of its principal cast.

  10. Without Teri Hatcher and co, the show would be pretty meaningless, and re-casting would be hopeless although there are many who think that the show ‘jumped the shark’ a long time ago.

A 5 season run of any show used to be considered the ideal run of a comedy sitcom — not too long, but enough episodes for syndication (“The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “Get Smart” are two shows that come to mind). A show that is a massive hit could string it out for 7-8 years before pulling the plug (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show” was through in 7 and in in it’s 9th season, “Seinfeld” went out in style, both shows ending before they got stale)

Could “Desperate Housewives” as a show be coming to the end of it’s use-by date? It certainly was one of the great shows of the 2000s, but it is all played out for 2011/12?
