Tasmanian jobs may go in WIN restructure

The MEAA is concerned about a small number of Tasmanian jobs that could be cut from WIN's Hobart base.

The Tasmanian branch of the MEAA is concerned that WIN could close its Hobart commercial production department as part of a restructure.

General manager of WIN in Tasmania, Greg Rayment, says no decisions have been made yet.

“We’re looking at the way we provide our production services across the state. At the moment we’re in consultation with staff about the best way forward and that is our priority at this point in time,” he told ABC.

But there are fears the work would shift to its Wollongong headquarters.

The union says there has been no consultation.

There are six employees at the Hobart production office.

  1. I started my career at TVT6 in Hobart in 1983 and left jut as WIN took over. We used to produce live shows out of the studio most afternoons and had full production running. When aggregation came upon us (meaning the southern station and northern station both had to broadcast statewide) all of that ground to a halt. I visited some former colleagues in Hobart last Christmas and was sad to walk through the gutted facilities.

TVT6 was a training ground for the national networks, and some of the best on camera and behind the scenes operators now in senior positions around the country and internationally learnt their trade on the job at Tasmanian stations. The skills and experience I gained there have taken me to all Australian networks and overseas. One wonders where the next generation of creatives will come from.

The balance between more choice and local production seems to have swung way out of balance in the aggregation revolution.

Jeepers, Wollongong WIN can’t even organise it’s own News! The amount of times that they fail to remove recorded glitches from the pre recorded news is woeful. Last week the 6pm News from Nine on WIN kept going to ad breaks during a story, then came back and went to a blank during Nines correct ad break (or repeated the same ad break they had just shown)
WIN TV for being the “Biggest Country Network” really needs to pick up its on camera work “Amateur” is the word that comes to mind. Poor Tassie!!!!

  3. Does this include a camera & sound crew? If so, I don’t know how they’ll shoot Mr & Mrs Smith’s General Store ads in future. Will ‘Gong HQ be flying crews all over the country shooting ads? I’m confused…
