First on Nine (and SKY and Seven)

Should Nine News really be plugging a story as "See it First" if the vision has already aired elsewhere?

Should Nine News really be plugging this story of the refugee tragedy off Christmas Island as “See it First,” when the vision has already aired on both Seven News and SKY News?

Checkout the telltale logos.

That said, there is of course a far more compelling story at hand here involving the deaths of 27 people. Let’s not lose sight of the bigger picture.

  1. It was an absolute disgrace shown by Seven and Nine in their 4.30 bulletins. It is one thing to display a logo on the corner of the screen, but it is a new low to display words right in the middle of the screen. How rude is that? Someone oughta rise up against the TV networks for this!!! It is getting out of control, ACMA or some other watchdog should put a stop to this I mean do the TV networks deliberately do this to p**s their audiences off or what???

  2. When they say “See It First”, it doesn’t mean that you will see it first on their bulletins, rather, it is implying that you should see it first on Nine. So technically, it isn’t false, but it is deceptive.

  3. Yeah, BBC Breakfast in the UK was showing the vision from both 7 and 9 with the huge watermarks plastered across the screen. Makes the Australian media look dreadfully tacky to those overseas!

  4. @Kenny

Well I’m not sure if they had it first, but even if they did, they didn’t do anything about it…News 24 has more resources at its fingertips than anyone else but they didn’t use them. Sky News had rolling coverage for 3 and a half hours with expert interviews and numerous eyewitness reports over the phone (whilst ABC were replaying Stateline)…it was almost as enthralling as their coverage of the coup against Rudd. And again then, even though ABC may have got the scoop first, they didnt run with it and were outshined by Sky News which has far less resources

  5. Nine News in Brisbane must have read your story David because I just saw a promo with the same footage but this time they trimmed the picture down so you couldn’t see the Seven and Sky logos.

  6. @James and @Rob: Nine is using the slogan “See it first!” as their brand, their point of difference from the rivals and it is what they claim to stand for. But to have the slogan accompany vision that is clearly not theirs and clearly not “first” just shows what a mockery their own branding is.

Agree totally though that this story is about a far bigger picture but the networks need to realise that we are not so easily persuaded by marketing hype anymore and won’t just blindly believe a slogan because they say it. It needs to be believeable and “See it first on 9” isn’t.

  7. Yes, I saw Nine’s ‘First On Nine News’ strap-watermark on BBC World News last night through ABC News24.

It reminded me of what some Middle Eastern broadcasters do when they get a massive terror attack in their area & they’ve got pictures.
