Just don’t mention the word Cronulla

Rachel Griffiths makes her guest appearance in this week's episode of Rake, in a plot that sounds too too familiar.

Rachel Griffiths makes her guest appearance in this week’s episode of Rake.

Griffiths plays a shock jock who spews forth a barrage of stuff aimed at conservative radio listeners -the sort of thing One Nation campaigners might have used as a campaign agenda in a heartbeat.

As the plot unfolds racial violence on an Aussie beach erupts.

Last week it was five years since the Cronulla riots.

After that incident, the Australian Communications and Media Authority found that 2GB’s Alan Jones broadcast comments that were “likely to encourage violence or brutality and to vilify people of Lebanese and Middle-Eastern backgrounds on the basis of ethnicity”.

While the ABC budgets don’t quite extend to riot scenes, you can pretty much figure out how Griffith’s character gets caught up with the law.

Of course any resemblance to characters and incidents real or otherwise is purely coincidental.

It airs 8:30pm Thursday on ABC1.

  1. Love Rachel Griffiths, and am enjoying Rake, had it saved up for this tv wasteland time of the year but we gorged on 5 episodes over the weekend! I may have missed the post, but is it coming back next year?
