Southern Cross has now confirmed announce the arrival of Channel Eleven for regional Australia.
It will launch across its four aggregated markets of Queensland, New South Wales, the ACT and Victoria on the same day as TEN launches to metropolitan areas: January 11, 2011.
The news will come as good news to regional viewers who were awaiting clarification they would not miss out key episodes of favourite shows such as Neighbours, The Simpsons, Dexter, Supernatural and Nurse Jackie.
Southern Cross Media CEO Rhys Holleran said, “We’re thrilled to announce that we will be offering and launching Channel Eleven for regional viewers at the same time that metropolitan viewers will have access to this new service.
“With a stable of some of the most popular comedies and dramas, as well as iconic programs The Simpsons and Neighbours, Channel Eleven promises to be unlike any other multi-channel offering on Australian television- particularly given that there will be no program cross-over between Channel Eleven and Southern Cross TEN.
Meanwhile the government plans for other areas to access all Free to Air channels via its VAST satellite system in the future.

Simon, it was marked as 11 for two days and then they changed it back to Coming Soon. I sent Freeview an email about it and then they changed it back to Coming Soon and said it had not been confirmed yet. Typical I suppose we will have to wait until the last minutes again!
@Margy, not sure which Freeview website you’re looking at but 11 is not marked for Tasmania …
freeview.com.au/channels/default.aspx?regionId=12
On the Freeview site they have 11 marked on the channels for Tasmania and Darwin instead of Coming Soon, which it was a couple of days ago. Wonder if this is a mistake or if 11 has been confirmed now for these areas!
Your sources DaveJ?
You mean the newspapers in Tasmania that reported it months ago? P
I’m happy to hear this, but I kinda figured it out after the first dozen or so Eleven promos on SCTen Newcastle. Nice to know (some) regional viewers aren’t getting screwed this time around unlike the whole Ten HD thing. As usual Ten has grabbed the rights to a lot of shows I like but hopefully I’ll actually get to watch them now.
Sydney already has their old One SD channel redone with promo/howto rescan video loops, I wonder how long Newcastle will leave it before they get the placeholder going.
I’m kinda curious what LCN SC will choose. 51 or 55 seems like the most probably choice. They already have a redirect of SCTen on 55 here but seeing as the other networks have redirects of their main channel in their upper ranges maybe they’ll keep it.
@Rob,
ONE HD in SC10 areas has been running at ~15Mbps as opposed to ~11Mbps in Metropolitan areas.
ONEHD has not had more bandwidth in SC10 land because they reduced it to the Ten level when Ten reduced it for ONESD introduction. As I’m able to watch both at the same time the PQ is identical.
Once again Win Tv viewers in South Australia miss out…it sucks being in a second rate viewing area…
@ Otama, up till now SC10 has only had 2 channels, so ONEHD has had more bandwidth than the equivalent on TEN (which also had ONESD). But now with 11, the 3rd channel for SC10, ONEHD will lose bandwidth and therefore reduce quality.
@digitalj – thanks for the explanation.
I’m getting sick of the changes on Nine/Go!/GEM can’t wait for CH11 to start, added to that TENs plan to put sports related movies on ONE this could be a turn around for them.
@Otama,
This is a common misconception people have with DTV, just because 2 or more LCN’s (Logical Channel Numbers) are labelled “ONE HD” does not mean there are 2 or more streams of ONE HD, there is actually only 1, that being LCN 1. LCN 11 only “redirects” the tuner to LCN 1, much the same as all the “shortcuts” on your computers desktop.
Can’t wait for ELEVEN to start, it’s going to be totaly AWESOME!!!!!
Bring on January 11 & the launch of ELEVEN!!!!!!
What about south australia
Woo Hoo finally an announcement from Southern Cross that it will be coming to regional NSW.
What about Darwin? Or do we have to wait over a year again like we did with GO!?
Thanks for the conformation David, I suspected something like this when I saw the 11 ads begin airing in Canberra (Proof I too watch way to much tele.)
I’m looking forward to Stargate Universe.
