Survivor‘s 22nd season will vary its rulebook one more time, to enable booted players a shot at returning.

In a new, long-term tweak to its format, each of its voted-off castaways to a new Redemption Island.

There, each will live alone with the same bare-bones supplies given to former tribemates, until the next player is eliminated three days later.

Then, the two will face off in one-on-one challenges, followed by another eviction ceremony. The loser is banished from the show permanently, while the winner remains alone in exile to face the next eliminated contestant.

The last one standing will return to the main game toward the end of the season.

Survivor has previously returned evicted contestants, notably in 2003’s Pearl Islands, when exiles formed a third “outcasts” tribe. But this time everyone will know about Redemption Island and that they may face a foe once again.

The 22nd season was already filmed in Nicaragua, the same locale as the current series, which premieres in the US in February.

Jeff Probst says he and executive producer Mark Burnett have been pushing CBS to make the change for two years.
