Airdate: 2011 People’s Choice Awards

Queen Latifah will host the 37th People’s Choice Awards at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, which airs live today on FOX8.

The event began in 1975 when the winners included Mary Tyler Moore, Barbra Streisand and The Sting.

Now there are over 40 categories (sounds like a long show!), with The Big Bang Theory, Glee, How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family and Two and a Half Men up for Favourite TV Comedy while The Good Wife, Gossip Girl, Grey’s Anatomy, House and The Vampire Diaries are up for Favourite TV Drama.

Other categories include Favourite TV Crime Drama, Favourite TV Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show, Favourite TV Obsession, Favourite TV Guilty Pleasure, and even Favourite TV Doctor. Crazy stuff.

The annual People’s Choice Awards live telecast gives fans a chance to honor their favorite entertainers, while the People’s Choice official website, peopleschoice.com, lets enthusiasts voice their choices year round through polls and contests. The People’s Choice Awards celebrates fan favorites in music, movies and television and is the only major awards show where real people – not industry insiders – determine the nominees and winners, setting it apart from other awards shows.

In the age of American Idol, Dancing with the Stars and countless other franchises where the fans decide the outcome, People’s Choice was ahead of its time. For the past 37 years, many of Hollywood’s most popular actors, musicians, television shows and movies have been named People’s Choice Award winners by their fans.
