GO!, SBS1 beat TEN on Saturday

The Hopman Cup was a victory for the USA but on Saturday night both GO! and SBS1 beat TEN's primary channel in the ratings.

On Saturday night both GO! and SBS1 beat TEN’s primary channel in the ratings.

TEN sunk to 7.1% share for the night while GO! was 8.7% and SBS1 was 7.5%.

TEN’s decision to broadcast the Hopman Cup final live on both channels cost it in ratings share. The network landed fourth for the night, and the week, behind the ABC.

It averaged just 197,000 on TEN and 68,000 on ONE across the broadcast.

But the Hopman Cup has generally been good for ONE which saw its share lift to 2.7% for the week, up from 1.2% the week before. It reached as high as 3.5% mid week. So it was the simulcast pn both channels that may have been Saturday’s undoing.

A number of readers have commented to TV Tonight that they are angry that the ABC dumped the Perth tennis event and grateful they could watch it on ONE.

In the final, the American team of John Isner and Bethanie Mattek-Sands beat Belgians Justine Henin and Ruben Bemelmans 6-1, 6-3.

  1. The Hopman Cup should have just been on ONE. Its a great tournament i love watching it each year plus the coverage was quite good throughout the week despite a few hickups and hope it continues next year but just on ONE. Thats what the channel is for!

  2. This Years Hopman Cup coverage on ONE HD has been very good the commentators were at their usual best. The action very good as well. Petty Serbia didn’t manage to take their place in the Final because of the injury to Ana Ivanovic, but overall great tournament and excellent coverage. I liked it when the players made their way upstairs straight after the match to chat to Anthony Hudson great effort considering they were tired as. Best of all was the consistent Live coverage of the event. The only downside is they could have telecasted day and evening matches that would have kicked ass. ONE HD really showed how tennis should be covered unlike the crap that 7 dishes up they have no respect for the Australian Open series. Tennis Australia should give the rights to TEN/ONE HD, Maybe that is just wishful thinking on my part. Oh and don’t forget to tune in to the II NET NBL Championship 2010/2011 Exclusively on ONE HD your home of basketball.

  3. Good Call: Broadcasting the Hopman Cup

Bad Call: Broadcasting it on both networks.

I assumed it was the fault of the Anti-Sphioning List. If it wasn’t and this was deliberate then it was just a bone head move.

  4. If the hopman cup was actually a solid performer for One – boosting it to a 3.5 from it’s usual .7 (a massive 500% increase) then perhaps Ten’s plan was to sacrifice one Sat nite in the dead of summer and get the hopman extra broad network sampling.
Next time those 200,000 or so Hopman Ten watches may follow it over to One – boosting One even more

  5. The coverage was good. However, airing it on the dedicated sports channel would have been enough. Advertise it on ten and people who are interested will take note and watch it.

  6. I’m glad the Hopman Cup isn’t on the ABC. That’s what the sports channel is there for i.e. to play sport. I’ll admit I was watching the science programmes on Ch 73. That’s why I love the digital channels also that I can now access them (barring bad weather or power outage). As it provides more choice. I guess around 2013 Ten will just have it on one channel assuming they still will have the Hopman Cup and somewhere to play sport. Before then they and/or the sponsors will decide what they prefer.

  7. It’s obvious 10 aren’t beating themselves up over ratings. They have a plan and are sticking to it. They aren’t going to panic with a major reshaping in process with new and powerful board members just round the corner.

  8. The coverage has been good, so let’s not be too harsh to Ten cause i think they have done a good job. The simulcast was made for people who can’t access the digital channel. And this is Ten’s first year broadcasting the Hopman Cup, the ratings will increase as next year definitely if they can keep the good work.

  9. D’uh to Ten and One. Putting the same thing on both channels is going to dilute your market share. Was that one of Jamie and Lachlan’s decisions I wonder?

  10. ONE’s coverage of the Hopman Cup has been great. Glad they got the tournament. But it was stupid to play them on Ten as well. Not to mention they dumped White Collar for it. ONE was introduced to play sport, so use it. No need to force it on the main channel also.
