Nine takes week as news dominates

Nine's coverage of the floods helps it take all 5 cities in Week 3, as viewers are drawn to the unfolding drama in Queensland.

The Nine Network has won Week 3 of 2011 in a week when News has dominated the landscape.

Nine’s coverage of the Queensland floods on Nine News, Today, A Current Affair combined with its Twenty / 20 Cricket helped it comfortably win the week. Viewers appeared to take notice of Nine’s coverage of the unfolding disaster, after its Flood Appeal and the blanket coverage. The Today show beat Sunrise, however Seven News still bettered Nine News overall.

Significantly, Nine won all 5 cities, including the Seven stronghold on Perth.

ELEVEN also had a good launch last week, reaching an impressive 5.6% share on Thursday. A new Simpsons episode was its best performer on 326,000.

Week 3

  1. jay jay, some need to take off their primetime-coloured glasses. Ten does extremely well during the day (B&B, Oprah, etc.), however this doesn’t get reflected in “daily” share, which only covers 6pm-midnight. The picture would be quite different if daily share was calculated on 24-hours, not 6.

  2. ashes to ashes on abc2 rated 456000 thousand viewers nationally but does not appear in top100 for week3 is it really that unworthy of mention. I quite happen to like the show.

  3. For some reason Nine always seem to do well when there is big breaking news like of course the QLD floods, NZ mine blast, black saturday fires etc. But when things are normal more people watch Seven News instead, & Nine for years now cant seem to get over the fact that they are not always Number 1 in news anymore.

  4. pfft, another reason nine thinks their great because they won in non-ratings season. just wait until when ratings season starts again watch nine lose to seven!..

  5. David, why do people or networks worry about ratings in non-ratings season?

If we all care (and it seems we do), isn’t it all a sham for all the networks to have a race to the bottom – to all chase the highest ratings for programs at the bottom of the televisual barrel?

  6. I’ve read on Mediaspy that ABC News 24 previous highest viewing audience was 2.2 for the Victorian Election. It was equalled last week (at 2.2) as well as surpassed at 2.4. As well as getting 2.0. Isn’t it normally around 0.7?

I’ll admit I watched it as well as most of the other main channels flood coverage except mainly 10 because I could rarely catch it. They usually had something else on when I tried. I think all of them did well (on the whole). I was glad that Channel 9 got rid of the annoying and ridiculous graphics, labels, electronic graffiti as well as music after the first day. If that’s what it’s like most of the time on the channel I’ll never watch it again regularly. Which I did for over twenty years with Brian Naylor. But after he left it just went downhill. That said I might not of been watching the 6pm news but most of the other coverage was good. Too bad the marketers usually win the argument when it comes to quality, content, electronic graffiti and unnecessary music effects. Because if they could just go with the news I could watch most channels. They proved it last week. I fear it just won’t last though. Again too bad. But good work last week. Also my thoughts are with those affected by the floods and fires as well as the volunteers and emergency services.

  7. @Ryano: Nine used their Brisbane assets very well.

Nine in Brisbane has also got the news momentum that it has needed since the Paige/Lofthouse switch eighteen months ago: now is the time to use it, to really promote 6pm, before it becomes a three cornered contest for the first time in many years in a week’s time.

The separate QLD Today Show this week has a great chance of succeeding. Even if they beat Sunrise in Brisbane once: it will be a classed as a success for Nine.

  8. @Chris – I agree TEN has probably the least to watch right now, I guess the first test will be this week with Oprah on 3 or 4 nights, that can only help their ratings.

I haven’t watched much FTA lately (QLD Flood coverage aside) except Sunday nights with SBS and ABC offering up some good new shows in the non ratings period.

  9. Just saw an ad during the cricket saying Nine are doing a Queensland only version of Today all week breaking away from the national edition. It will be interesting to see if this goes extremely well whether it could become a permanent thing.

  10. Agreed jay jay. There seems to be a lot of Ten fans who post around here and vote in the awards. The ratings say they are a minority of the population though.
I watch more Pay TV than FTA.

  11. i still think 7 did a exceptional job on the flood crisis coverage but i think in the 1st couple of days was a bit hard with nearly everyone on holidays and bringing them back must have hurt their coverage in the ratings but even though i hate nine don’t watch it they did a good job too but all networks seem to keep the coverage on demand and updated good job to all.

  12. People need to remember that Ten have nothing on at the moment in prime time. Absolutely nothing!! So once their line up settles and the rating season starts up we will get an indication of how they are tracking. The news line up will be a small part of prime time.

ABC currently have the most newish content of all the FTAs and Nine and Seven had all the rolling coverage and cricket.

Next week Nine has cricket, Seven has Aus Open and Ten Oprah. I am sure the ratings will reflect the changes in schedules.

So the news isn’t all bad for Ten

Eleven did really well in it’s first 5days. The news straegy won’t work overnight but will be around for a while. So people need to stop knocking Ten til the full line up comes to fruition. At least they take risks. Nine and Seven are comeplete and utter rubbish and treat viewers with contempt

Oh and Ten…Get rid of the gadget show. It’s rubbish.

  13. It will be interesting to see how it unfolds post floods, but all I can see is ELEVEN taking share away from TEN. Isn’t the idea supposed to be by introducing another channel that they increase their market share, not just halve their current share???

  14. ABC beat TEN for the second week in a row. Their extended news from 6pm-7pm to cover the floods failed miserably. I think people need to take their rose coloured glasses off when it comes to TEN and actually look at how badly they are performing. They only get good numbers when Masterchef is on.

  15. ITA The Gadget Show is crap (for our market) its clearly aimed at UK audiance and how old is it with the ‘new’ iPhone which has been around for months now. I was hoping for a local tech show and up-to-date. Thank good for BBC World and Click!

FYI you can watch it online from the BBC site if you don’t have Pay TV.

As for other things I think Nine has had some of the best coverage, but what I’m hating is how they all seam to recycle the same clips over and over. And it is getting a bit tiring the endless ongoing coverage.

Do we know if Brisbane was down in the rating due to the flood and power outages?

Good on ch11 and it’s great line up, sure to help TEN in the overall ratings in a few weeks time.
