Nine wins Week 2 -but it’s all about ABC beating TEN.

Week 2 has gone to the Nine Network, but the real news was another victory for the ABC over the TEN Network.

Week 2 of 2011 has gone to the Nine Network, its third win in summer ratings. Last week Nine even enjoyed a rare win in the city of Adelaide, which traditionally swings to Seven.

But the real news of the week was another victory for the ABC over the TEN Network.

The public broadcaster bettered the commercial on 5 of 7 nights, aided by four channels over two. On Saturday night TEN’s simulcast of the Hopman Cup final (which the ABC had dumped) cost it dearly -TEN’s primary channel was beaten by both GO! and SBS1.

The launch of ELEVEN this Tuesday cannot come soon enough, to help address the channel imbalance.

ASTRA Week 2

Week 2

  1. John, One made money in it’s first yer of operation, and is ahead of expectations, so how can you call that a failure? They’re not channel 9, it’s not all about being #1.

For those commenting on music and MTV – unfortunately MTV doesn’t play music! It’s endless reality shows. It’s been many years since it was last anything resembling a music channel. I’m in favour of a music channel, but against “MTV style programming” – no thanks.

Tony, 10 have shown much more commitment to sport than 7 or 9 have. Compare One’s F1 coverage with what 9 used to do.

As for Hopman Cup, there was different content on 10 early in the night – it was only on both channels later at night. I suspect Ten wanted to do this (have exclusive live coverage on One) to increase One’s exposure now that is is HD-only (and the ratings show this to have worked).

  2. Yeah i too didnt understand why the Hopman Cup Final was simulcast on both ten and ONE HD didnt make sense. Yes 11 will be a saving grace for TEN if the content is watched.

  3. Surely the number of people that have no access to digital is smaller than the number of people with digital that would have watched another show on Ten, had it been provided.

Where not mandated, I don’t understand channels throwing away ratings to show the same sport on two channels. If they must – put different content on ten – but provide brief updates in ad breaks for how it is going, and a tease to switch to One HD if you want to watch the whole match.

  4. @John – you’re obviously guessing when you say that and as far as I and *all* of my friends are concerned, none of us are sports nuts, we don’t have PayTV, but we watch a decent amount on One. We all hope it stays. I’m not against a music channel either but not if it just consists of the manufactured pap or middle-of-the-road “classic” rock that’s currently clogging up commercial FM radio.

  5. @FJ
the ABC didn’t want it because they were focussing on regional and women’s sport, which I assume is why we saw women’s soccer on the ABC a few weeks ago.

I’m really glad Ten bought it, but it really needs to be a One property, not only because those ratings are terrible for a main channel, but OK for a digital, but also because it’s suicide in this environment to only show one program across your network.

  6. *As for a ‘Video Hits channel with MTV style content’…yeah, if there is a market for it, you know, like sport!!!*

Yes there is a market for MTV! Not every one watches Sport. I dont, my friends dont, but we are music fans.
And another thing, why bother getting ‘second’ channels if all they do is give reruns of age old sitcoms. There’s hardly any new content on Australian TV. And who wants to watch a movie on a commercial channel anyway, which gets interrupted every 15 minutes.
The only TV I watch in recent times is ABC and SBS.

  7. But the recent poll here had Ten cleaning up. The Ten fans must be in shock.

No idea why they showed the Hopman Cup. ABC and Fox didn’t want it.

    Epic fail again from Ten.

  8. One will rate higher as the current sports rights deals with Fox disappear and they can bid to get live EPL, etc, and other things which are Fox exclusive. They will always have bad days and nights, but also get some huge numbers at other toimes of the week when they can buy more stuff that is currently tied to Fox alone. That’s why Packer the Lesser wants to shut it down, its a direct threat to the main reason people subscribe to Foxtel.

  9. I’ll admit I wish Ten had mirrored Ten HD on SD like they did the sports channel then more people could of watched it. Including me as at the time I only had access to SD Digital. Ironically the person in the house that is interested in sport (we don’t have Pay TV) only now has access to a HD/SD/Analogue TV. So it would of been better for everybody. Oh well at least it’s happening now i.e. Eleven. Good luck on the first week. I’ll be watching.

  10. Sorry John, but you are wrong.

I Don’t have ESPN and FoxSports, nor will I get them. For the most part, One has done well, but could do more like US Collage Gridiron (Last year was Great!!!!), and hopefuly the NHL (Ice Hockey). One just has to learn what sports are Duds, like Tennis!

As for a ‘Video Hits channel with MTV style content’…yeah, if there is a market for it, you know, like sport!!!

  11. Sorry John I doubt ONE will go away from sports any time soon, but it really needs more high profile events, the F1 alone is not cutting it.

As for TEN as a network, I’m sure they wish they could have had ch11 up sooner and next Tuesday can’t come soon enough!
