ONE joins sports website

TEN has announced an investment in a leading sports website in a deal to further ONE's branding.

TEN has announced an investment in sports website theroar.com.au to further ONE’s branding.

The deal will enable ONE’s online portal to tap into The Roar’s online community discussion and user-generated stories.

The sports site has more than a dozen professional sports columnists, and thousands of amateur writers. It is majority owned by Conversant Media, an online publisher that also publishes popular culture website, Lost at E Minor.

TEN’s chief digital media officer Nick Spooner said: “The Roar is a perfect fit for onehd.com.au. Not only will it complement our established roster of on-air experts contributing commentary and analysis of Australian and international sport, it adds a compelling point of differentiation from other sports sites: the voice of the fans. Fans can stand alongside the on-air and online experts as a legitimate voice on major sports news and issues.”

The Roar Sports Media managing director Zac Zavos said: “We’re excited about the opportunities that will come from the investment by Network TEN, as we look to grow our community and attract new advertising revenue.”

The Roar joins onehd.com.au in early March.

  1. Live streaming of One HD to web and mobiles/iPad would be a great asset to the channel.

ABC stated they could only do this for News 24 due to licencing, but of all the other channels, One HD is second most likely to be able to sort this out, due to the lack of sitcoms, dramas and movies that complicate matters.

  2. Great move for ONE who pick up a good community on The Roar. It’s my first stop for thoughtful opinion on the big events and sport. Rugby there is second to none. I wish they’d cover more motorsport!

  3. Jbar there are many women that love sport and I am a fanatic, we don’t need one to be more blokey, Channel nine do enough of that already! More variety and investment in showing live sport should help long term. Balanced coverage, respect for the viewer and a good mix of sport is something lacking from most channels coverage these days, if one can master these they should be here for years to come.

  4. @ Rob, but ONE should go for more “viewer friendly” programming for Prime Time to get the eye balls in, increase ratings during Prime Time and then be able to advertise their other programming to a larger audience.

Once the rating year begins they are looking at it the right way, with Movies two nights a week (Sunday & Wednesday), Adventure Tuesday’s (Ax Men & Black Gold), and Fiight night Thursday’s (WWE Experience & UFC Unleashed) nightly from 8:30pm with the Swim Series before hand.

ONE needs to get the eyeballs on their screens during prime time to continue to grow the sports they’ve already got in non-Prime time hours and to aquire sponsorship funds to improve their agreements in future seasons. (More games a week in the NBA, NHL games, live EPL games, NFL pro bowl and such)

  5. JBar – why have 2 7Mates when there is one already. ONE doesn’t rate because its shows are not in primetime not because its ignored by viewers. If one channel for sport only out of 16 is too much then as has been constantly said, drama queens will never want or be satisfied unless every channel is scifi central off the satellite within seconds of being on in the US

  6. Throwing good money after bad. If they were smart, they would transform the channel into a male skewed channel like 7mate. They could fill it with sport as well as other blokey interests.
