Returning: American Idol

American Idol will once again air on FOX8 just hours after the US premiere goes to air.

This will be the 10th season of the show, now without Simon Cowell and under the watch of returning producer Nigel Lythgoe. There are new judges, new bandleader, new set, new mentor.

Can the show reinvent itself?

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, Season 10 will feature two new judges – Golden Globe-nominated actress, platinum-selling recording artist, movie producer and entrepreneur Jennifer Lopez; and multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Steven Tyler, the frontman of Aerosmith, the best-selling American rock band of all time. Lopez and Tyler will join returning Idol judge Randy Jackson for the 10th anniversary season.

In addition, Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, co-founder of Beats Audio and one of the world’s most successful and prolific music producers, will join American Idol as an in-house mentor. Throughout the season, Idol will go behind-the-scenes to feature Iovine working with and lending his expertise to the contestants as they compete to become the next American Idol.

The Emmy-nominated series has been responsible for launching the careers of some of the country’s leading recording artists including Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks and Kelly Clarkson.

It returns Thursday, January 20 at 7.30pm.

  1. Yes, i wasn;t clear what Steven meant by that term in the context of A Idol. I thought he meant that it did something within that season to earn that overused term. Cowell’s departure might be the catalyst for its downhill slide, but as you say it may be too early – we’ll see – depends too on how well they pick the talent.
After all it is meant to be a talent quest!!!!

  2. How did it jump the shark last season? It replaced Paula with Ellen. It had auditions, Hollywood show, final 24 – then the top 12….
I am not confident it will hold up without Cowell. Like him or hate him he gave the show its ‘tension’. There will be a novelty factor with J-Lo and Tyler. We’ll see…..
