Take a look at Matt Corby now

Another Idol graduate proves second place isn't all bad, now in the running for the APRA Professional Development Awards and doing UK gigs.

It was 2007 when Matt Corby came to prominence on Australian Idol.

As series runner up, he was beaten in the final by Natalie Gauci. But as so many other second place-getters have proven, there is life beyond Idol‘s first place.

Corby is now one of three performers to be shortlisted for the 2011 APRA Professional Development Awards. Eight finalists will receive cash, travel, education valued at over $25,000.

During his time on Idol, Corby was the series’ poster boy, with his good looks and melodic voice winning him a legion of fans.

But Corby was never entirely comfortable with the pop fit, and since pursuing his own music signed with Scorpio Music Management playing original, more indie-style music.

His EP Transition To Colour with the song Made of Stone was released late last year.

Corby is now is spending the next few months writing, recording and playing shows in London, including a headline show at The Bowery tonight.

Winners for the APRA Professional Development Awards will be announced on March 14th.

  1. Scorpio Music knows quality when they see it, regardless of so-called indie-cred. One of my favourite albums of the last few years – “The Last Party” by The Hampdens – exists partly because they saw it for what it was. Lisa Mitchell’s records, likewise (and I did get to say “told you so” to a few friends after that one suddenly became “acclaimed” 🙂

I haven’t heard much of Corby’s stuff yet, but by this stage I trust the Scorpio Music spidey-sense 😀
