Anderson Cooper attacked in Egypt

CNN presenter Anderson Cooper was punched in the head by a pro-Mubarak mob in Egypt.

CNN presenter Anderson Cooper was attacked in Egypt on Wednesday.

Producer Steve Brusk Tweeted, “Anderson said he was punched 10 times in the head as pro-Mubarak mob surrounded him and his crew trying to cover demonstration.”

Cooper then escaped to the roof of a nearby building, where he said on air: “We were in a crowd and we were just set upon.”

The incident highlights the issues for correspondents in covering international flashpoints.

ABC News (US) corresponent Christiane Amanpour said the journey from the Cairo International Airport to her hotel took over an hour because “every 50 to 100 yards our car was stopped and there were people with machetes, meat cleavers, swords, rifles, metal bars,” she said.

“Once they saw [who we were], they waved us through. I would describe the journey as tense but friendly.”

  1. Katie Couric from CBS news high tailed it out of the country after she suffered a bit of argy-bargy with the locals.Somebody like Couric is not in the same league as the likes of Christiane Amanpour in that sort of volatile situation.

  2. This is indeed a dire situation in Egypt. Their current leader or dictator was i key man in keeping things hush hush in middle east and was relied upon by America for that very reason. It is sad that journalists are targeted from time to time and he was their to cover the event for CNN that is hes job (I am talking to you SGT).

  3. What’s happening in Egypt at the moment is extremely concerning. I don’t think it’s far off heading into absolute anarchy. And at a time when the plane sent to pull out stranded Australians left Egypt half full, apparently due to government officlas misadvising travellers.
