Micallef to pilot variety show for TEN

Move over entertainment guys, Shaun Micallef is about to throw his hat into the ring with a new project.

He’s had variety-style shows on Nine and the ABC (although the latter was more sketch parody than the real deal) an now Shaun Micallef is exploring the idea of a variety show with TEN.

The confirmation follows new entertainment shows this year for Adam Hills and Ben Elton and the expected departure of Hamish and Andy from TEN.

“I’m doing a pilot in July,” Micallef has told the Herald Sun. “Any variety show worth its salt is live. There’s a big taste for that at the moment.

“I’m also talking to TEN (about other projects). I think the relationship with TEN has been a good one and it would be nice to build on it.”

He also dipped his toe in the water with a New Year’s Eve bash for TEN just over a year ago.

Since Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation it’s air to say the broad TV audience now “gets” Micallef a lot more than it did with his outings on Nine, or even the underrated Newstopia on SBS.

Micallef should really be hosting the Logies for us this year too, given his popularity with both audience and industry, but I guess while it’s on Nine that’s unlikely.

  1. Good for Ten.They see something in Shaun that Nine fail to comprehend & yet hold onto persons who are devoid of talent,Richard Wilkins anyone??
If he puts a little mix of all his shows into the pot he should have one great program & i think he will be on a winner.
Saturday nights? No don’t think so.I’m thinking more in the vain of Don Lane.
    9.30 slot Mon/Thurs or similiar.
    Barbara Streisand indeed!

  2. Micallef is just wasted on this rubbish quiz show.

Newstopia was arguably the best TV show we’ve ever seen on Oz TV. In my opinion it eclipsed both The Micallef Programme and Micallef Tonight.

  3. Equally anxious and excited. One of the problems with the New Year’s Rave was that it was just too long, and I don’t think he had enough people to properly bounce off. If it has good pace, a strong team, and the guests “get” the vibe (whatever it may be), it could be great. I’d love to see some new material from him, also a tad more dryness than we get on TAYG.

  4. Newstopia was frickin awesome. If they don’t bring that back, I would love for it to be like the Daily Show or the Colbert Report.

Live sketch comedy would be really risky, as we’ve seen with Ben Elton. Adam Hills was more of a chat show and Gordon St. was the more successful of the two. There’s no taste for ‘variety’ from where I’m sitting. I don’t think I’ve seen a successful/lasting live variety show (as distinct from a chat show) in recent years. The Sideshow, Hey Hey [the new series], Ben Elton and Let Loose Live were all duds.
