New ABC1 idents coming

Updated: ABC1 is about to reveal its own look, and possibly its very own slogan.

ABC1 will launch a series of new IDs on Sunday.

TV Tonight understands the change is part of a re-branding under new Channel Controller Brendan Dahill.

ABC TV’s last refresh was its August 2010 campaign with people floating through the middle of the ABC lissajous, created by Sydney agency Moon. But these were used across the network.

Now ABC1 will push its own look, and possibly its very own slogan.

FURTHER UPDATED: Back on track for Sunday launch!

  1. I agree with Deano – let’s hope the new watermark is a hell of a lot smaller and less intrusive than the current, henious , lumbering blue blob, absolutely ruining the ambience of music clips on RAge.
May go a long way in placating all of us disgruntled Rage viewers out there….

  2. @Mike, the executive responsible for the fug ugly watermarks and current idents retired the middle of last year. Hopefully the new ABC Head of Marketing brings the network into the 21st century like the BBC which got rid of on-screen watermarks 5 years ago. On screen watermarks are so last century. The viewers know which channel they are watching and don’t need condescending logos jammed down their throats all the time, especially coloured ones.

  3. I don’t understand the current branding that they’re using with an SES volenteer, farmer etc? How is that supposed relevant to the ABC network. All they would have done with this one is rip it off the BBC, like they did with ABC2 which is identical in concept to BBC2 with the double shots of a skateboarder going down the street, the person walking down the laneway with 2 shots etc.

I agree the ones where they used to draw the logo around their fingers was very clever for the ABC with branding.

On other note why have ABC kids channel and also show kiddie shows on ABC2? Plus stop showing constant repeats on ABC2 am sick of seeing old BBC shows having a run again after 10:00pm.

  4. Lets hope they remove the logo from ABC’s Rage once and for all! not only does it violate there charter, but ruins the music video clips, as theyve been shown logo less for 20+ years!

  5. Don’t they have anything else better to do, like concentrate on programmes the majority of Australians actually want to watch instead of wasting yet more money after already having a supposed image overhaul less than a year ago?

Though I do have to say I really, really, really loathe those random people, like that obstetrician talking about the baby and father or that silly old woman blathering about writing crime fiction, talking about absolutely nothing that relates to the ABC or Australian culture. Somebody should have been sacked over them.

I used to really like the 2001 ones I think, were it had various community groups and people that actually reflected Australia drawing the logo on screen.

Still, none of it matters if they don’t actually have decent content.

  6. I’m not even sure if the floating-through-the-lissajous ones were meant to be idents. Sometimes they were used in the middle of breaks between programs, other times they seemed to replace the standard idents. Yet more evidence of the ABC’s total failure to grasp the idea of consistency in branding.

  7. Great news. As mentioned on an earlier post, the time is long overdue for those ABC1 IDs – the architect, the farmer, the author, the surfer, the young musician, the SES worker all now encrusted with those weird animations and many of them quite annoying – be put out to pasture. Let’s hope the new ones are innovative, artistic and really fresh, and without people for a change. Excellent idea for ABC1 to have its own identity. Let’s hope ABC2 also does the same, and soon. Their low budget-looking IDs are very, very tired and dull.

  8. thank goodness! the awful idents we have suffered from over the past 3 years (those live action with animated elements ones) are so horrible that a good description of them defies the english language. i am certain that whatever they come up with it will be better than what they have now.

  9. How the times have changed. I don’t watch much ABC anymore but i still remember the days after school from 4pm till 7pm i used to watch it continuously. I loved the Ferals, Round the Twist and of course Heartbreak High!!!

For me it’s just not the same without shots of random people drawing the logo with their fingers (i used to try and trace them on the screen as they did it HA!)

  10. Hopefully it means no more of those random people talking about nothing to do with TV… like the man rambling about his favourite piece of music… Who cares?

I’d really like to see an ABC1/2 rebrand if not to just get rid of those awful watermarks! IIRC the SBS rebrand cost significantly less than the ABCs and looks FAR better…
