New OzTAM chairman appointed

Fairfax director and former Austereo chief Michael Anderson becomes an independent chairman for the ratings body.

OzTAM yesterday announced the appointment of Fairfax director and former Austereo chief Michael Anderson as independent chairman.

This follows OzTAM’s shareholders (Seven, Nine and TEN) seeking an independent chairman.

Current OzTAM chairman Steve Weaver will step down but remain a director.

“I am looking forward to joining OzTAM at this time of explosive growth in digital television channels and consumer choice,” said Anderson.

“Advertisers, more than ever before, need to understand viewer behaviour in this rapidly changing environment, and OzTAM is ideally positioned to offer additional insight and research leadership.”

Weaver added, “We welcome Michael to the OzTAM board. His diverse experience, industry relationships and commercial acumen will be of great benefit and guidance to the directors and management team.”

  1. A couple of years ago I would have said that the OzTAM ratings system was pretty accurate, despite how it jars with what most of the commenters on here think (it’s us that’s skewed). However, I note that the selection process begins with random dialling. What telephone number database do the use? If it’s just the white pages then they will never call the more tech-savvy and generally younger people who do not have a traditional landline. This will only get worse over time.

  2. Surely it’s time to increase the number of homes with ratings boxes. A pool of only 2500 is no better than the old days of log books! 1000 homes for every million Australians please OzTAM.

  3. It would be good if he could make that viewer counter work, it is difficult nay impossible to believe that a majority of viewers actually watch the swill dished up by the commercial networks 10, 7 and 9
