UK Masterchef clones Aussie kitchen

This clip for the UK series of Masterchef is a little over the top, but a compliment to the Aussie version.

This clip for the UK series of Masterchef (the original series) is a little over the top. A 2001 theme? Really?

But it does revamp the series, with a “flash new set.”

A flash new set that clones the Australian kitchen. Not that there’s anything wrong with that given that Shine is revamping a series it already owned.

But it is a nod to the excellent job done by FremantleMedia Australia. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

The new season of Masterchef, which premieres next in the UK next week, also sees the contestants travel to Australia.

  1. Have seen some episodes of the 2009 Australia Masterchef version and I definitely prefer it over the one we have here in the UK. The Hong Kong part was brilliant.

  2. Set looks horrible. It looks like a modern mixed with the classic. If there going to use a warehouse/ wooden type theme, they need to use as much wooden cooking stations. The Judges luck personality. In Australia, our judges sample food and give feedback but they also have fun where as UK judges are boring and plain. By far, Australia has the best judges and personalties and definitely the best set.

  3. I liked watching the UK version Because it was nothing like the Aus version. It was all about the cooking. Then last year they started to change the format and I though uh-oh. I don’t know if I’ll waste my time on it this year.

  4. I’ve seen the Greek version of Masterchef which also has the exact same kitchen set in a warehouse. It’s freaky how similar it is. Television commentators often mention how popular the show is in Australia and they even run a comment about Australia in the promos for the network.

  5. It was interesting travelling through Europe last year to see how widespread the Australian format has gone. Greece and France both have carbon copy versions of Australian Masterchef, right down to the opening credits, camera angles and contestant interviews.

I wonder if the UK version feel like they’ve missed the mark for all these years?

  6. British contestants coming to Australia? Does that mean they will come to the MC kitchen in Sydney and compete with contestants from Australian season 3 (the battle of the Ashes)? Or will the British contestants compete challenges and be judged by Gary, George and Matt?

  7. judges lack the same energy as george, gary and fatty matty but it looks better than the gordon ramsay US rip off or even the NZ version. if i had to rate the international imitations of Oz Masterchef i’d go
    1. UK edition
    2. NZ
    3. US
