how do you justify your viewing audiences-i live in a small community just outside Toowoomba andeveryone I talk to watches nine/win news and current affairs and yet you figures say seven wins hands down-there is no way your figures represent the viewing audiences of the whole of australia-the only way you could possibly verify these totals is by checking each individual household-i fail to see how seven continues to beat rivals 10 and nine-i and many others don’t believe your ratings are any where near correct

  2. A. February 21, 2011 at 4:49 am -

I hope my asking for the Smallville figures hasn’t caused you any trouble. Sorry if so. Although I’m still curious… I know it might be a hopeless desire however. And I do hope if there is trouble it isn’t major.

  3. Dave February 20, 2011 at 10:32 pm -

Love the Nine News First at Five, has this always been on? I used to always go to Ch10 until they dumped it a few weeks ago. Big pick up 9 with 11th on Sat!

  4. Ann February 20, 2011 at 8:39 pm -

Impressive figures for ABC1 news, years since I have seens that

  5. ryan February 20, 2011 at 4:11 pm -

Ten wake up and look @ your wknd news coverage, it sucks! it should be @ 5pm and 6pm.

  6. Geoff February 20, 2011 at 4:01 pm -

@ Bruce Banner, TEN is just in a holding pattern with Saturday night’s for the next month until Before The Game & Saturday Night AFL returns (atleast in most of the country)

I personally believe Micalef wouldn’t fit a Saturday night anyway, with the majority of his “key demographic” that seems to “get” him is normally out doing other things. If Michalef was going to have a Variety progamme it should be on a Sunday night @ 8:30pm, similar to what Rove Live was in it’s final years. A topical, light entertainment program to start the week.

  7. Bruce Banner February 20, 2011 at 3:14 pm -

Shaun Micalef’s variety show thing needs to go on Saturday nights on Channel 10, give the station a boost on it’s weekends.

  8. MillerT1 February 20, 2011 at 2:26 pm -

When was the last time Seven won every night of the week on main channel shares and network shares? It truly means that Seven has a solid schedule and that Nine’s schedule amendments have finally made them undone.

  9. Jimbo K February 20, 2011 at 12:04 pm -

Seven did really well last night. Both Madagascar 2 and Quantram of Solice did well, while Seven News beats the competition.

Poor Ten. They just can’t get any descent ratings (and shares) for Saturdays. I thought that Night at the Museum would do slightly better, but it was against other family movie, Madagascar.

And Ten’s Evening News got 180,000 viewers, just ahead of SBS News of 173,000. Ouch!

  10. aznfratboy February 19, 2011 at 11:05 pm -

@ Trev (spread over two posts) I completely see your point and I was one of the first to hit out at TEN opting for a news programme at 6pm, when talks of it occurred in 2009, purely because unless it rated almost as good or as good as Seven and Nine did at 6pm, it was never going to be worth it? Why?

Let’s see, and regular readers will begin to think of me as a broken record – we don’t get enough news? We get news updates at the start and end of every advertisement break, we get the on the crawl scroll during our favourite shows, this is on top of the… 6am, 7am, 9am, 11am, 1pm, 4:30pm, 5pm, 7pm Project, Late News, and don’t get me started on the outside-TV sources we get our news from, remember it’s 2011, did we really need another hour of news?

  11. aznfratboy February 19, 2011 at 11:05 pm -

How many ways can you spin the same story, using a different person read the same story with different words doesn’t make the situation different, it’s like calling Hitler, John Smith, either way, he killed 20million people.

I read an article a while back, that stated back when Frasier aired daily at 7pm on Nine, and matched Home and Away’s viewership, they did a comparison as to the cost of how much each cost to air for their respective channel, Frasier cost about $10-15k, where as Home and Away cost “up to and over five times that much”, so I’d imagine The Simpsons costs probably about the same as Frasier did for 9. Now, I’m not sure how much Negus + the production crew earns, but I’m going to say that it’s probably more than the cost of a repeat of The Simpsons. And here’s the advantage of The Simpsons over Negus, note, no disrespect to George here, because I respect the work he has done in the past, but almost all 15-30 year olds have favourite Simpsons moment(s) or episode(s), ask them about a Negus piece, you’d get a demographic of floored chins, meaning that The Simpsons is likely to better for the advertising demographic than Negus is.

  12. Trev February 19, 2011 at 3:47 pm -

    @ JB,
You won’t get an argument from me re people wanting an alternative to ACA and TT, but where we choose to differ is I don’t believe George’s show is good enough to take them on. Spin it any way you like, but it remains 21/2 hours of news. For the average viewer that is overkill and rightly or wrongly, there is a sizable percentage who believe George lost all credibility simply by signing on with10 in the first place. It may be unfair, but unfortunately it’s true.

  13. JB February 19, 2011 at 2:24 pm -

Yes but if you combine the numbers for George Negus and the late repeat, it’s numbers are bigger than Neighbours, and 70% have said they would rather watch George Negus than ACA or TT at the 6.30 timeslot. So move George Negus to 6.30, it will get a better audience than it’s getting now, and it will get a bigger audience than Neighbours was getting, and is currently getting. It’s a no brainer. Ten need to move it. What they put at 6 though i don’t know. Personally i think Neighbours should have been moved to that timeslot than to Eleven. Neighbours viewers on the whole aren’t news viewers so wouldn’t have been a problem. People however want an alternative to the trashy current affairs programs, Ten offer it but put it on while everyone is watching 6pm news so we still lose out.

  14. Trev February 19, 2011 at 11:59 am -

So 71% would prefer to watch George than 7 and 9’s programs that are loosely referred to as current affairs(insert canned laughter here). Why aren’t they then?
The results of the 2010 end of year poll show that the most popular FTA Network was 10 (more canned laughter required here). What does this prove? Absolutely squat, other than the majority of voters were 10 fan bois.
Moving 6pm with George to any other time slot will not have any noticeable effect on the shows ratings, in fact it could more than likely bring about its demise quicker than it’s going to be anyway.

When a poorly scripted and atrociously acted Neighbours achieves higher ratings on a digital channel than Mr Negus, one should have the honesty and commonsense to realise that 10’s news concept is nothing other than a well plucked turkey.

  15. sammy February 19, 2011 at 8:33 am -

I think you are all wrong about the TEN news.

As the Queen song says “too much love will kill you”, here we know that too much news will kill you.

An hour from 5 to 6pm then 30 mins of local, give me a break.

TEN, just bite the bullett and bring back the Simpsons LOL.

  16. ryan February 19, 2011 at 5:17 am -

Been checking out the ratings arhcive and noticed last yr the 7pm project didnt pick up until early april where it hung around the high 700’s and 800’s and then even more when masterchef started where it hung around the high 800’s and mid to high 900’s. Maybe something to do with daylight savings? This will prob happen again this yr so that will be good for 7pm but i wonder if more will also watch george??
On another note does anyone else think that Ten shoud return sytycd aus in 2012??

  17. ryan February 19, 2011 at 1:26 am -

Yes i agree: Ten move george to 6.30! and Also have a local news version with only local content @ 6 so like we said time again sydney 6pm news, melb 6pm news and so on.

  18. JB February 18, 2011 at 11:59 pm -

Dear Channel Ten. Please refer to the poll on the homepage. You know what you should do. 6.30 With George Negus, sounds good doesn’t it!

  19. Julz February 18, 2011 at 11:12 pm -

I agree with an earlier comment – bring back Temptation channel nine!!!!!!!

  20. Andrew B February 18, 2011 at 5:45 pm -

Ten should at least try swapping 6pm and Ten Evening news around for a few weeks in March and see how it goes. Some nights, the 6.30 news is 5th in the timeslot – after Seven, Nine, ELEVEN and ABC1. Ten should be third.

  21. Andrew B February 18, 2011 at 5:42 pm -

    A. Star Trek – Next Generation 96,000

  22. DanielW February 18, 2011 at 5:17 pm -

I told them erlier this week on this site to stop with the evening news! They didn’t listen! They got 378 then 284! Thta’s a new and all time low for them! Neighbours does better and that’s on digital! This is real news for TEN and it breaking everyday! Up and down figures won’t cut it! A test pattern sounds good! I’d wtach that over a condesed can of 5pm news!

  23. A. February 18, 2011 at 3:57 pm -

    Thank you Andrew B. :)

David or anyone do you know the figures for ST:TNG? Thank you in advance if you do.

  24. DAN February 18, 2011 at 3:13 pm -

yep time for nine to make a new series of temptation and put it on @7pm just make sure eddie or karl dont host it

  25. Ryano February 18, 2011 at 3:04 pm -

There’s no doubt that Ten and One HD executives read this web site. Comments here & other TV blogs do influence their decision making.

  26. FJ February 18, 2011 at 1:05 pm -

    lol @ Ten News Hour

Those numbers are terrible. A test pattern could do better.

7PM Project is still getting horrible numbers too.

  27. RichoTB February 18, 2011 at 1:01 pm -

It seems almost every popular show is down a few hundred k in the ratings this season…They (network execs) said 1.2 million was the new 1.8 million a few months back in an interview on here…perhaps 1 mill is now the new 1.2?

I’d say this is due to having 15 channels now on FTA instead of 5…or perhaps people just don’t like SVU, Desperate Housewives, CSI, as much as they used to..

  28. Nick February 18, 2011 at 12:31 pm -

Good to see nine doing so badly.

  29. Allie February 18, 2011 at 11:04 am -

@Rutzie, I agree, Nine should have seen that the day would come when the golden egg laying goose (a.k.a. 2.5 Men) was going to curl up and die of exhaustion. Looks as though that day has come, as the nightly 7pm episode has dropped well below 700K, well out of the Top Ten and not a good enough lead-in to their prime time viewing schedule. As it is the exceedingly lazy and reactive Nine network we are talking about, I doubt whether they’ve given any thought to alternate 7pm programming.

  30. paul February 18, 2011 at 10:40 am -

Nine are in real trouble here – the idea that Seven could win a Thursday night against them last year was unbelievable, but Seven have done it two weeks in a row now.

  31. Rutzie February 18, 2011 at 10:08 am -

I would hate to be Michael Healy right now. He had to have seen the day when 2.5 Men repeats weren’t gonna cut it anymore. Surely they have another option for 7pm weekdays.

  32. DansDans February 18, 2011 at 10:07 am -

I caught the last night replay of 6PM and thought it was a good show too – however its was a little dangerous in letting Chris Bowen waffle on too much about how much “good” he has done

BTW – while the TEN Evening News numbers are low – there seems to have been a significant drop off for ACA and a minor drop in TT numbers

  33. Allie February 18, 2011 at 8:56 am -

6pm with George Negus is a very good show, so I’m not surprised it is rating well as a late night offering. Ten need to hold their nerve and stick with it, its audience will grow.

  34. Nathan February 17, 2011 at 10:22 pm -

@francis Yeah count me as a fan of My Family, best thing on at 6pm. :D

  35. J Shaw February 17, 2011 at 9:57 pm -

Why is 6pm with George Negus being repeated late at 10:30pm ?? If you add up the ratings at 6pm & 10:30pm figures reach over 600 thousand watchers per night. If they just show George at 6pm the ratings should get better providing they show good news stories.

  36. Tommo February 17, 2011 at 5:56 pm -

It seems as if TEN have listened to the comments and feedback on this website and others regarding their evening news.
Firstly, watching it last night, the stories were far more state focused than any other episode I’ve seen (I’ve seen about 1/2)
Also, here in the West, they have started a big radio campaign now advertising ‘Perth’s Evening News’ as opposed to ‘Ten’s 630 Evening News with Narelda Jacobs’ as they have been advertising previously.
Hopefully they are getting the message because I’d hate to see the experiment fail as I love George Negus’ show so much.

  37. Joe February 17, 2011 at 5:31 pm -

Good figures for ten news Adelaide: 104000 viewers nice! Seeing that they rarely crack 100k

  38. JB February 17, 2011 at 5:29 pm -

@Jarred. Here here. couldn’t agree more. Love City Homicide. Brilliant show. Seven can’t axe it. They just can’t.

@RichoTB, i heard Blue Bloods was being moved in the US because it was rating so well on a friday night. It is a great show.

  39. RichoTB February 17, 2011 at 4:12 pm -

Blue Bloods has lost almost half the audience that tuned in to the pilot episode two weeks ago…its a Friday 10pm show in the states, not sure its strong enough to anchor a midweek lineup here. But its not like House would do any better either…Ch.10 are screwed. lol

  40. Dave February 17, 2011 at 3:57 pm -

    @ Craig

William Shatner was great last night soo funny

did anyone see the ep with Larry King Priceless

I agree they should put Letterman on 11 as well

  41. Jarred February 17, 2011 at 3:29 pm -

City Homicide won it’s timeslot with excellent ratings and what a fantastic episode it was. This show is the best cop show on the TV and best of all, its aussie. Ch7 would be absolute fools to axe this show when it clearly has an interest out.

  42. Craig February 17, 2011 at 2:37 pm -

@Dave – I’m loving Craig Ferguson also, he’s just different from most of the others and it does help that TEN/CH11 have kept in at about 10:30 most nights and not very late like they have been doing with Letterman. At this point I kinda wish they have move Letterman to CH11 as well when they keep shifting it around on the main channels. William Shatner was great last night!

  43. Adam February 17, 2011 at 2:15 pm -

    @Dave
Yes the Late Late show is bloody hilarious. Love it…!!

I really enjoyed last nights lineup on ABC.. Adam Hills & Laid were great

  44. CK February 17, 2011 at 1:57 pm -

Ch 9 – the home of (laughter) failures??

  45. steve February 17, 2011 at 1:13 pm -

Does Ten NEWS at 5 just obliterate all it’s competition in it’s time slot? It’s just crazy!

Anyway i think TEN need to switch House and Blue Bloods around 8.30 is a much better timeslot for House which i’m sure TEN pay more for the rights of then what they would do for Blue Bloods, if indeed that’s how Commercial networks operate, i have no idea

  46. Ben Elton's Twin February 17, 2011 at 12:49 pm -

Although consistent, tens wednesday night lineup from 8:30 is performing rather disappointingly.

Mike and Molly doesnt work because it is cheap humour. Who knew u could make 30min worth of fat jokes.

The other point to be made on 9’s comedy lineup is it appears that they cant survive without the lead in of a two and a half men episode. Just look at big bang theory.

  47. Son February 17, 2011 at 12:31 pm -

Laid lost a lot of viewers – nearly 200,000 – so I guess that means the majority are not that interested in the entitled generation’s (or generation ‘me’, are they the same thing…?) take on the world.

I’ve never known Australian TV to be in such a bad state – we have so many egos running things. Nothing will improve till someone with real substance comes in, ignores the boys club, and hires the right people for the right reasons. I am so depressed.

  48. Andrew B February 17, 2011 at 12:07 pm -

    A. Fringe ep 2 97,000. Smallville Sunday did not make top 50 digital shows for the day, so less than 104,000

  49. Michael February 17, 2011 at 12:06 pm -

George Negus was slightly higher on Wednesday, very slightly, maybe the late night encores are working. Mike & Molly not doing too well, Nine’s comedy lineup not as strong as I thought it would be. Seven must be happy!

@ Dave, I watch Craig Ferguson every night, Sid the Cussing Rabbit is hilarous, I think I remember David saying he’s ratings around 60,000 – 70,000 viewers a night, not sure if that’s changed.

  50. JB February 17, 2011 at 11:37 am -

@Rutzie, i have a atheory. Nine’s crap. All their shows are garbage. Only thing i watch on Nine are Survivor and Footy Classified. And well looks like i’ll be watching Survivor elsewhere cos they have no plans to show it yet.

Blue Bloods is brilliant, shame it’s not rating.

Watched Adam Hills last night and really enjoyed it.

  51. Dave February 17, 2011 at 11:30 am -

I love “the late late show ” on 11
    am I the only one?
can you tell me how its rating

  52. Trev February 17, 2011 at 11:16 am -

The missus announced she would like to watch Blue Bloods then spent the next hour on the computer, so I got to watch it. True, the acting wasn’t too bad but I lost count of the number of programs over the years that had identical plots. As for the aging Tom Selleck, he was a cross between the late Rock Hudson’s McMillan and Magnum on Valium.

  53. Allie February 17, 2011 at 10:56 am -

Mike and Molly is an obvious bomb that will probably be shunted off to Go! soon, and The Farmer Wants A Wife is a humiliating yawn. 2.5 Men seven o’clock repeat continues to shed viewers. Bottom line – Nine is in trouble this year. Seven are already tanning their hide and their Home of Laughter is turning into The House of Pain.

  54. ducko February 17, 2011 at 10:56 am -

Everybody is all lovey dovey about Adam Hills tonight show, & by all accounts it’s quite good. However, it’s well below the ratings of Spicks & Specks & Gruen Transfer. I wonder if the public really wants a tonight show?

  55. salf February 17, 2011 at 10:53 am -

9&tens Wed lineups are bombing. 7 have what looks like an ordinary lineup but they have dominating shares simply because of the weak competition.

Good to see MKR is rating so well. Looks like Seven is going to win the ratings war again this year.

i am curious what are the ratings for the show My Family on ABC1 at 6pm…i watch it every night as it is very very funny and was just wondering how many other people were watching it too.

  59. Tony Bee February 17, 2011 at 9:47 am -

Another good show for Adam Hills. Keep up the good work!

  60. Rob February 17, 2011 at 9:43 am -

TBL under million already and Blue Bloods well under a million, not good news for Ch10. And Farmer Wants A Wife also under a million. Wednesday night….was there something happening that I didn’t get invited to?

  61. Ronnie February 17, 2011 at 9:36 am -

There is daylight growing between 9 and 7 ratings – I predict heads wont roll! But they should. Nine and commissioning and programming needs an overhaul. Remember Underbelly was an accident from Eddie Maguire’s brief tenure. What else have they done? More importantly what do they think people will be watching in 2012? Washed up Brits in smutty comedy? Gimmeabreakpeople.

  62. Rutzie February 17, 2011 at 9:29 am -

It’s quite incredible that Nine News and Underbelly are the only two shows on Nine that have cracked the million mark this week. Every show seems to be struggling. Anyone got any theories?

  63. A. February 17, 2011 at 9:20 am -

David am I right in assuming that the Fringe figure was episode 1 i.e. 131,000? If so what was episode 2 please?

Also is there still no info about the Smallville figures this week’s Sunday for one or both episodes?

What great eps of blue bloods and house tonight, was glued esp to house which is good cause i’ve been turned off lately but this was very good and great acting from all.

  65. Jerome February 16, 2011 at 9:07 pm -

@luke osman, cougartown gets plenty of ads, much more than should be expected for a 10:30 show.

Shame about George Negus. Great presenter, terrible timeslot

  67. steve February 16, 2011 at 8:22 pm -

The repeat for 6pm with George rates almost as well as it does in the original timeslot.

Is this just a clever way for TEN to make back the money it’s investing into the bulletin?

  68. Mr. chandler February 16, 2011 at 7:01 pm -

mkr gets that number every week on tuesdays, because of packed to the rafters

  69. Dave Rafter February 16, 2011 at 6:58 pm -

Rafters brilliant ratings really sticks in the craw of some of the regulars here. If u don’t like it – don’t watch it. Every Wednesday – Whinge whinge-blah blah. Nearly two million love it. Whining about it ain’t; going to make it go away. Just makes you look petty and snide. There’s a hundred channels to choose from. Or go to bed. Make love, anything! That’s what Jules and I do.

  70. Luke Osman February 16, 2011 at 6:20 pm -

I love how people moaned about Keeping Up With The Kardashians and how ch7 cleared it from its schedule despite hitting 400,000 viewers or something. Uh, hows it looking now? 180,000.

Good job to Cougar Town for keeping up strong 10:30pm performance despite no promotion what so ever.

This whole NCIS sitch is a pickle. Looks like Ch10 just can’t get their Monday’s right.

  71. ryan February 16, 2011 at 5:49 pm -

@Goonies: last weeks 2 eps were the best ever but this weeks sucked! the whole tony isn’t tony ep last night was sooo boring

  72. Darryn February 16, 2011 at 5:26 pm -

So the ratings continue as last year, except 9 and 10 seem even worse off. Posters here seem to be much more bitter this year though, you are too old if you watch that, too young if you watch this, scheduling is all wrong and why didn’t you listen to me if your fav channel continues to fail, shows are failing because they didn’t start on 8.36pm on the dot etc etc. It really isn’t any of that in my humble opinion, but rather the ability for all channels to cater for all audiences. Obviously, at this early stage in the year, 7 is leading in having the balance across their 3 channels. Easily changed if the other networks plan better. Most people are quite capable of moving from one channel to another to watch what appeals to them and the low figures overall indicate that is what most people are doing. No channel holds anyone for more then what is on at that very moment. There are a number here that watch one channel and one channel only for whatever reason only they know, but they are not indicative of the average TV viewer and the sooner they see and understand that, the sooner they may understand that, like a very good football match, the end may not be to your liking but it doesn’t mean the person next to you did not get something out of it that you didn’t. No matter who you are.

  73. Brad February 16, 2011 at 5:19 pm -

    Adam

The secondary channels are all about targetting demographics. 7 has been smart and disciplined with its 2 offerings; 7-2 is targetting an older demographic and I’m sure the sales department sell advertising with this quite open whilst Mate is targetting the middle aged male.

9 & 10 (except ONE) appear slightly less targetted. I know they say they are targetting the 18-39s but they are a bit of a mish-mash with a mix of niche series and lots of ’60s sitcoms.

  74. Brad February 16, 2011 at 5:16 pm -

Harry, Monday was extremely competitive if you were chasing viewers interested in police procedurals given NCIS was up against Bones and Underbelly. Tuesday may be a bit easier given NCIS is the only police procedural against TG and PTTR. NCIS’ Tuesday figures were excellent given it was up against the PTTR juggernaut.

  75. Nicky February 16, 2011 at 4:59 pm -

Packed to the Crappers I don’t know why people watch that its total boring tripe.

  76. Goonies February 16, 2011 at 3:46 pm -

To all the NCIS fans – is anyone else feeling bored? I am not riveted like I once was :(

  77. Harry February 16, 2011 at 2:54 pm -

TBYG isnt going too well these past few weeks, 850k is an ordinary figure. Interesting that NCIS flopped on Monday night, and held up really well against a 1.8 mill Rafters.
