Amazing Race in Tokyo

The Amazing Race is beginning to stockpile a spooky series of disaster destinations.

On last night’s episode of The Amazing Race on 7mate they were racing through Tokyo.

Having watched the Japanese disaster across the weekend it was just a little bit bizarre.

But it isn’t the first time Phil Keoghan and his team have raced through an area before it is struck by disaster.

In 2004 the trains that carried the teams in Sri Lanka and the town of Galle were later damaged by the Asian tsunami.

In 2005 it raced through New Orleans prior to Hurricane Katrina striking.

Or should we be looking closer at the host? Last month NZ born Phil returned to his home city of Christchurch -the location of February’s earthquake disaster.

Just sayin….

  1. The first episode of the first season began with a New York montage including the Twin Towers — and the episode aired a week before 9/11.

And the London episode of season seven aired in Australia two weeks after the 7/7 attacks — on the same night as a set of smaller copycat attacks. In fact, those attacks happened less than half an hour after the show finished in the eastern states (and presumably during the show in Adelaide).

  2. Maybe it’s a curse of reality tv – Survivor wrapped filming S20 in Samoa just before the earthquake and tsunami hit in Sept 09, and during shooting Survivor Fiji there was a military coup which prevented the “loved ones” arriving to participate.

  3. Given the number of countries they visit every year, there are bound to be coincidences like this. I’m guessing next weeks episode (which airs in the US this afternoon) will have a dedication to those people in Japan.
