TV loves a (Royal) wedding

Today, Sunrise, A Current Affair, Kerri-Anne and The Morning Show all invite themselves to a Royal Wedding next month.

Networks are gearing up for a broadcasting assault on the Royal Wedding, set to take place on Friday April 29th (UK).

The Today show is expected to broadcast from a London studio featuring its entire team. Karl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson will also front the network’s primetime live coverage.

Nine will send more than 40 staff for the occasion, including Tracy Grimshaw and Kerri-Anne Kennerley. Given the network’s investment in the 2012 Olympics it’s no surprise it will be looking to capitalise on this event.

Seven is also set to send a similar size crew, but its breakfast boys will be staying put in Sydney, leaving the gig to the girls.

Sunrise will remain in Sydney, with co-host David Koch crossing to Melissa Doyle in London.

Kylie Gillies will head to London for The Morning Show, while Larry Emdur stays put in Sydney.

And yet for all the cost and attention that will be driven towards this event, it will fall at the end of the Easter non-ratings period.

  1. To all those people who have written comments saying ‘Who Cares’ or ‘lol how pathetic! Couldn’t give a crap about these 2’ You obvioulsy do if you are reading this story and taking the time to comment. On you ‘Ryan’ and ‘Paul’.

  2. It’s interesting to note that SBS/ABC/Ten aren’t sending anyone. Well apart from the Foreign Corrispondance that are already there no doubt but still…

It’s not going to make a damn bit of difference, all the ratings are going to go to 7 and all the people who don’t want to watch it will watch 10, SBS or ABC and Nine will lose out on the ratings again.

I don’t think it much matters to them at this point whether its a non-ratings period or not. A loss is still a loss.

  3. @Jerome: Maybe they want Larry to pay for himself: After all, he is the $800,000 man.

@Brenton: Absolutely total holiday mode: It’s due to:
    1. QLD traditionally only having a week of school holidays at Easter.
    2. Easter in 2011 being so close to QLD’s Labour Day (three days at school/work, then Labour Day long weekend i.e. take opportunity for a extended vacation), people may just start fresh on Tuesday May 3.

  4. Seems a bit strange for Seven to just send Kylie Gillies over and not Larry aswell. I’m guessing they’ll have another female host with Larry in Sydney while Kylie’s over there.

  5. Do you know what type of coverage ABC and Ten will have for the wedding? And what about programming amendments for the night as it clashes with the AFL on Seven, the NRL on Nine and The Biggest Loser on Ten? I think Seven and Nine will have to apply to Communications Minister Stephen Conroy for special permissions to show the AFL and the NRL on their respective digital channels.

  6. I get the feeling they timed the weeding to be in the non-ratings period… okay maybe not but it’s fantastic timing. Guess Nine can’t delay their ‘fast tracking’ this time 😆

But what are TEN and the ABC doing? And I can only assume SkyNews will be using the UK branch for it’s coverage?

  7. I think audience for the wedding on Friday 29 will rate not as great as the networks will hope especially in Queensland as we will be in total holiday mode with QLD having another long weekend after the 5 day Easter/Anzac Day weekend. There is also sport to contend with.
