7TWO leads multichannel field

Seven won Week 15, but 7TWO is its quiet achiever, having beaten GO! every week in the ratings year.

Nobody will be surprised by the news that Seven won the ratings week once again. It was the ninth straight win in 2011 ratings with Seven News (Sunday) as the #1 show on 1.5m viewers.

But let’s turn our attention to multichannels for a moment…

7TWO has topped the field in every ratings week this year. On Saturday it hit as high as 7.9% -more than SBS channels combined- led by a 1997 episode of Heartbeat on 364,000 viewers.

GO!, which was the runaway leader last year, has only won one week this calendar year and tied another with 7TWO. Has its programming become blase or is it merely a reflection of the competition since ELEVEN arrived?

ELEVEN made its mark quickly and is now regularly third in the multichannel race.

Neighbours is the best performer on the multichannel landscape. In Week 15 it was the top programme on multichannels with 402,000 viewers, followed by an episode of The Big Bang Theory (400,000), more Neighbours (398,000 / 373,000), then Heartbeat and Jonathan Creek on 7TWO (364,000 / 357,000).

This week TEN announced ONE would revamp, aiming for a share of 2.5%. In Week 15 it attracted 1.8%, better then the figures it usually averages at around 1.0%.

In last place was ABC3 on 0.5%, reflecting that the channel switches off halfway through the primetime ratings zone.

  1. 7mate needs to be Relaunched and go for All Viewers 18 to 49 while Maintaining a lot of Disney and Sony Titles they now got and air Sitcoms from Both Studios in Primetime before 8:30.

  2. @mc – you sound like a Nine apologist. Seven’s strategy, whatever it might be, is clearly doing better than Nine’s so far – just look at the ratings.

Your claim that Go! is better defined as a youth channel than 7mate also doesn’t hold water. 7mate gets nearly twice the ratings of Go! in the 18-49 demo, and Eleven isn’t far off either.

  3. I don’t know why so many people here are outling the Seven channels’ age segmentation, as if this is their key segmentation factor and clearly better than Nine’s strategy.

7mate is young, but perhaps more clearly male and American. 7two is old, but just as clearly British and somewhat female skewed.

Go! is young. 9 is middle ground. So far, more clearly age segmented than Seven’s channels.

Gem doesn’t fit the pattern of course. It’s strongly female, and not young.

When it launched it promoted it’s sport coverage, which didn’t fit of course, but it made sense for it to broadcast HD NRL given that no other Nine channel could do it.

Why 7mate doesn’t show more HD sport, I really don’t know.

  4. Prior to GO’s launch and GEM as well, the marketing team told us a story, gave us the channel identities in clear and concise terms: GO! Youth focused, new hot shows, that wouldn’t air on the main channel but would find their home on GO and air very close to US dates. GEM female focused series both new and old, Australian and OS, with talk shows also mixed in. Post the launch however, programmers at Nine do what programmers at Nine always do and switched everything at random the moment, the ratings don’t land them in 1st place.

The opposite could be said for Seven, prior to the launch the marketing for 7Two was horrible (it’s Time choir!) and the identity of the channel confusing, but post launch the programmers really worked to develop a theme and consistency that viewers could rely on hence them returning to the channel regularly.

  5. If they want to revamp ONE then aim at 3’s and4’s. I mean Ten rates 15s and no one complains, ONE gets 1-1.5 and is sacrified for an extra 1-1.5

  6. @Russell, 7two targets 55+, why would they care if they were losing 18-49? if anything it means they have sucessfully hit their target audience.

7two was the most profitable multichannel in the 6 months leading up to the end of November making in excess of $50mil. and their ratings have increased significantly since then and the channel is very sustainable. so i doubt they care for people that tell them they are doing things wrong regarding demos.

  7. 7 Two is just bbc lite. The reason for its success is clearly with the demographic of old people aka baby boomers or older Gen X. This is significant because the baby boomers are huge in number in comparison to other generations. In my opinion i believe that Freeview has failed mainly because the Networks who are money orientated dont want to innovated and the only network who does gets raided and makes less money. Maybe its a sign of the times where engenuity does not equal profits but stealing rivals ideas does.

  8. @Big V – yes, that makes so much sense now that GEM gets about twice the ratings of One, and One’s ratings have improved since they started showing less sport.

  9. i’ve done plenty of research on how channels conduct themselves and if they reply to incoming mail from viewers. I found Channel 7 to be the most ignorant.

  10. GO! started out quite good but now it’s due for a name change – how about Repeats! While it’s true that 7TWO is also pretty good at repeats they mostly repeat shows that weren’t on only a month or so ago. They were smart to pick up so many of the the ABC’s pommy leftovers. Nine are, as predicted, killing several of their best shows like BBT and Top Gear by endlessly repeating them on GO! They never seem to learn.

Really though I’m not watching any of the commercial multi-channels as often as I did initially, they all seem to have gone into a decline (Eleven are somewhat of an exception thanks to The Simpsons and Futurama). It’ll be interesting to see if One can make the grade now that it has something on other than third grade sport.

  11. “7TWO leads multichannel field” sure makes for a great headline – but lets look at it in context.

TV networks measure their own success and make money on demos, not total people. (Unless you are the ABC)

On one of 7TWO’s strongest nights – Monday – last week they had a total people share of 5.1 leading Eleven on 4.4 and Go on 2.5.

But lets look at the numbers that actually matter:

    25-54
    Eleven: 5.6
    7mate: 5.2
    Go! 3.2
    Gem: 2.6
    7TWO 2.3

    18-49
    7mate 6.5
    Eleven 6.2
    Go! 3.5
    Gem 2.8
    ABC2 1.9
    7TWO 1.8

  12. Some of the shows of 7TWO have really stood the test of time. Vicar of Dibley, Are you Being Served, Some Mothers, Pie in the Sky….all well written and acted. Personally would rather watch these than some of the new rubbish on-air and can’t wait till first season of Doc Marten begins…I missed it first time around.
P.S – read somewhere that 72 wins the 25+ demographic each week.

  13. 7Two rates because the older demographic like the older shows, especially the good old British shows.
For all the people who don’t like that, get used to it, the population is aging, so there is likely to be a lot more older stuff in the future.

  14. Agreed with philm.

I’m in the younger demos and I like some of the shows on 7TWO, I love Coronation Street, I like Murphy Brown, I love the Brit coms, I like some of the movies they show. I’m looking forward to The Bill on 7TWO. It’s bett

  15. I’m glad Ch. 72 doesn’t seem to be editing out stuff on their channel but since I don’t tape stuff I can never watch it. Due to the start and end times especially the latter because of clashes. I did watch it when it repeated stuff early in the morning but they stopped doing that. So I rarely, if ever watch, them now. I’d watch Pie in the Sky and Jonathan Creek in particular.

These days I guess I watch ABC (ABC1; ABC2; ABC24 ) , SBS (SBS1; SBS2 including SBS HD ) , Eleven, Ch 73, Seven and occasionally Ch 99 when they put on some of their shows. I’d watch it more regularly if they could put on some reliable shows. They’ve got Chuck if only they could put it on past, or at, 8.30pm so they could air them all at a reliable time and not have to move it. I don’t know what other shows they could include. Although they are saving up their newer shows and I don’t know why. Maybe to avoid Easter/ANZAC Day? But why the rest of the month of April? Because the one thing I like with any channel is reliability. That said I look forward to them putting on their newer shows. Others might not wait.

  16. It’s funny seeing people barrack for their channel.

I can see people complaining about repeats of programming but the comment of “stop showing X so that Channel Y will get higher ratings” is a bit strange!

    Maybe there’s a lot of Nine/Seven/Ten shareholders on here…

  17. attention GO! programmers…. what the!! stop with the movies!! its enough!! it is not helping with your chances of beating 7two!
