Red Dwarf to shoot new episodes

British sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf is about to get new episodes with a follow-up to its 2009 mini-series.

British sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf is about to get new episodes according to its co-creator and chief writer Doug Naylor.

Speaking at the Dimension Jump convention, Naylor said UKTV had agreed to air Red Dwarf X as a 6 x 30-minute series.

His comments came after Craig Charles, who plays curry lover Dave Lister in the show, had previously revealed that two new series would be produced from January 2011. Due to begin filming in November, the series will be a follow-up from 2009’s Back to Earth mini-series.

Charles, Chris Barrie, Robert Llewellyn and Danny John-Jules are all expected to return as the crew members of the mining ship.

Naylor had previously stated that the next series of Red Dwarf could take place before or after the events of Back to Earth, to explain what happened after the cliffhanger.

  1. If they must re-boot – I hope they re-boot Holly and get Norman Lovett back on the monitor.
Back to Earth was average – but the lack of laugh track or live audience was the most unsettling part of it. I am not sure they need Red Dwarf, when the Beeb makes Hyperdrive – perhaps a cross over?!? More Miranda Hart is always better.

  2. @steph Really? You don’t remember the Only Fools And Horses or Absolutely Fabulous series that were made years after everyone thought they were over?

  3. “Back To Earth” was merely an homage to Red Dwarf & to Bladerunner, of course – that & a deluxe advert for the Dave Channel who were funding & hosting it.
It’s hard to believe that anyone would consider the 2009 miniseries as “real” Red
Dwarf material.Technically, is RD still the world’s longest “active” sci-fi series, as has often been claimed? (For a few reasons, Dr Who doesn’t get counted as pure Sci-Fi)

  4. cant wait finally! am a fan of the previous seasons back in the 90’s, the re-union was average, but i reckon film it back infront of a live audience, get some real conflict between rimmer and lister again, and as one of the previous comments, a bit more imaginative. 🙂

  5. Yeah i watched the orginalls in the form of reruns on ABC 2 and the “back to earth” episodes were crap and borring. The story lines didnt seem believable and unimaginative. If they can get that imaginative storyline train going then it will be a success how much i dont know but it will be good. Lets hope they get it right this time because if they dont recent history has shown that they wont last the full schedule.

  6. I can only hope this new series of Red Dwarf is a lot better than that abortion “Back to Earth” – which in my opinion was proof that the show had jumped the shark.

If it’s made by the BBC, has proper sized episodes, decent scripts and is filmed in front of an audience – it might be ok. But to be honest, I think Red Dwarf may have had it’s time, and maybe the producers should just let it rest in peace.

  7. Really? I thought the Brits were better than that – leave the rehashing and rebooting to the Americans (ok, there have been some good ones, but mostly are completely avoidable). I loved Red Dwarf in its early heyday, but could hardly watch the 2009 series – it made my stomach churn.
