Rumour: The Block for 7pm?

Is Nine planning to strip the next season of The Block into a weeknight format?

TV Tonight is hearing whispers that Nine is considering stripping the next season of The Block in a 7pm timeslot.

Could the reality series be the answer to Nine’s early evening woes? Since the failure of Two and a Half Men this year, Nine has been forced to action the slot with The Big Bang Theory.

But stripping a reality show at 7pm has worked for TEN’s Big Brother and MasterChef Australia. Without MasterChef at 7pm anymore the field is clear, and it could be hoping viewers will hook into The Block before their nightly dose of the cooking show at 7:30.

Nine has not confirmed industry rumours that the next season is based in Melbourne. It is again hosted by Scott Cam.

But what of the long term future of the timeslot? Nine has been piloting a new Q & A style show with Karl Stefanovic and Leila McKinnon imaginatively called The News Show. Could that be primed to take on The 7PM Project? Who knows….

  1. It is times like this I miss the Price is Right and Sale of the Century/Temptation.I think I remember It was before I started high school that 7pm was quiz time in our house due to the lack of decent alternatives elsewhere.

I find Scott cam to even be more irritating than Alan Harper ever was!!!

  2. This kind of show only can last a few months of the year and given they sell Big Bang Theory Box Sets everywhere I agree that Temptation should come back and they shoudl not have axed it for that 2.5 men garbage.Ed forever Charlie Never!!!!

  3. The Block will definitely be set in Melbourne (Richmond) this year according to the Herald Sun. Apparently there will be four houses instead of the usual block of flats – so a bigger project that could be perfect for a stripped show.

  4. The Block has a chance but aren’t Nine in all sorts of trouble!! Gyngell keeps talking to Packer about what’s wrong with TEN – I would be more worried about Nine falling apart. TEN is in major trouble and Nine is right alongside it!

  5. Cool, I’ve been waiting for news on The Block and here it is. I just wish they’d dump Scott Cam and bring in Deborah Hutton, she’d be perfect for this show. Much more likeable, not to mention she actually has a sense of class and style.

  6. Yeah, I’m sure Nine would love to jump on the bandwagon now that Ten and 7PM have done all the hard work, but they’re missing one thing: What makes 7PM work is the funny/likeable talent (with the exception of Steve Price) and you can’t get any further from likeable than Karl and, most of all, Leila McKinnon.

  7. And temptation was pulling in 1 million when it was axed, 2.5 men not looking so hot now.
Nine should return a gameshow, they have the right audience mix for it to wokmrk.

  8. Nothing beats Sale Of The Century back in the Tony Barber days. That music, those closeups of carry over champions, the suspense and the rivetting questions, that’s what a gameshow is about not the amount of money won as seen by the recent failure of Million Dollar Drop.
