Shine Australia calls for TV ideas

"We believe great ideas can come from anyone from anywhere," says Shine Australia.

If you have an idea for a TV show (or even a web-based show) Shine Australia wants to hear from you.

“We believe great ideas can come from anyone from anywhere and we’re excited at the opportunity to view your submissions,” it says.

To submit an idea Shine has set up a pitch website which requires you to register and submit your idea. There are a bunch of non-negotiable terms and conditions.

You can attach supporting material (up to 20mb) at the end of the application form.

Response time is approximately five weeks.

Read the terms and conditions and make sure you are happy.

  1. So, is it a good idea to submit an idea, but not too much detail (e.g. script) until you hear back from them? Or is it better off sending whatever I have so they can make a better call on whether it will work?

  2. I submitted something late last year and had a meeting with them about it. It didn’t go ahead but they took me seriously and gave me good feedback.

  3. This innitiative is a great example of people being given the chance to creat something remotealy original and hopefully successful. This is also needed desperatly in the australian industry since it obviously not coming from the Networks or any other companies.

  4. I think we need more police procedurals or medical shows… lol

Otherwise its a nice setup by Shine to get free ideas for them to use. These types of “programs” pop up every few years by different types, and should always be treated with caution.

Word of warning – there is no copyright in an idea. So the more detail you can provide (synopsis, character breakdowns, character arcs over series, beat sheets for episodes etc) the less likely your idea will be taken and assigned to others further develop without some recourse.

You also cannot shop your idea to any other companies whilst under consideration by Shine (which is always a red flag in the industry).

  5. I’ve sent several ideas to Shine and they don’t even have the decency to let you know it’s rejected. You have to log in to find out.

Besides, I had one idea rejected from them which was then shown to another company and want to turn it into a series. Your loss Shine.
