60 Minutes: May 22

On this Sunday's 60 Minutes, Liz Hayes has a story on the horrendous Westboro Baptist Church from the US.

Uh oh. On this Sunday’s 60 Minutes, Liz Hayes has a story on the horrendous Westboro Baptist Church from the US.

Expect talkback radio to fire up over this one.

Do not attempt this at home.

Broken Hearts
Who could forget that smile? Or the amazing tale of bravery that went with it? Alisa Camplin stole our hearts when she won gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Only later did we discover that she did it with two fractured ankles. But Alisa knows that broken bones are nothing. In March, her son Finnan, was born with congenital heart disease. His fight to beat his illness was as inspiring and heroic as any of his mother’s achievements.

Pure Hate
Right now, on the other side of the world, there is a bunch of people who hate you and we mean absolutely despise you. But don’t worry; they hate everyone else in Australia. The folk of the Westboro Baptist Church hate us so much that they actually rejoice in our suffering. The tragic bushfires of 2009? This year’s devastating floods? Apparently, we deserved it all. And the US Supreme Court lets them say it and more. Under Freedom of Speech, these so-called Christians can damn us all to Hell and right at the front of the queue, is that wayward Liz Hayes.

Without A Trace
It’s a rite of passage for many young Australians. Every year, thousands pack their bags and set off on working holidays overseas. They want an adventure and often they take risks that perhaps they shouldn’t. Usually, they come home in one piece, all the wiser for the experience. But 24-year-old Owen Rooney didn’t make it back. And no one knows why. He vanished somewhere in the wilds of Canada, and the tiny town where he was last seen isn’t giving up its secrets.

Producer: Danny Keens

It airs 7:30pm Sunday on Nine.

  2. Okay I haven’t heard any uproar over this story, did the sane people just ignore it?

Also I’d like to know their opinions on the floods and storms currently hitting the US, are they bad people too?

  3. Okay I didn’t see the story but did read parts of the transcript on Nine 60Min site and I don’t get the point of the story, but then again this is from the same country who bought us another church nut job who burnt the Koran and one claiming the world would end on Sunday.

I would have watched the one about the world ending, 60 Minutes shouldn’t have even given this nut job the 12 minutes of airtime to preach their hatred.

  4. Shame on 60 Minutes. What point is there in giving an obviously demented bunch of nutbags more oxygen? The Westboro Baptist “Church” comprises of about 20 or so people. They’re irrelevant and clearly an extreme example of very fringe sect. There was no good to come out of that story. No benefit for viewers. All it did was increase the WBC’s profile and state the obvious: that what the WBC does is ridiculous and we all naturally comdemn it. Only relevant stories in the future please.

  5. Its really sad that this man’s hatred has infected so many people and caused so much pain. what’s worst is that he justifies his actions through the Bible. God does not hate; he loves, he forgives not matter what. But the overall tragedy of this story is the children, their parents have them spewing this hatred and they believe it. They are growing up believing that God hates, and people who are different to them do not deserve to be happy. I don’t understand why people must distort religion for their own warped view of the world.

  6. What a sad, sad world.
I take my hat off to you Liz.
If I was interviewing that Jackass I would have knocked his block off.
I think We all agree to freedom of speech. They have been given freedom to be pathetic.
    God Bless us all.

  7. I find the actions of these various groups around the world appalling, they have such twisted beliefs of God and what He wants us to practice. Freedom of speech is great but it can’t be applied on its own, trouble is people forget about basic decency, manners, acceptance and understanding of different people and their choices. As a religious person myself I hope this doesn’t taint peoples views on God and Christianity. Practically every religion has extremists in it but at the heart of them have good everyday people who don’t preach hate but love. God is love!
