Australia’s Matildas take on New Zealand’s Football Ferns at Gosford’s Bluetongue Stadium on ABC1.

Australia’s Matildas take on New Zealand’s Football Ferns at Gosford’s Bluetongue Stadium later this month.

ABC TV Sport’s Stephanie Brantz will host the broadcast live on Sunday, May 15th broadcast with match commentary from Peter Wilkins and special comments and analysis by former Matilda, Alicia Ferguson.

The game will be Australia’s final warm up match on home soil before they head to Germany for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in June.

The match is part of a two-game series between the Matildas and the Football Ferns. The two teams will also clash – “behind closed doors” – at Bluetongue Stadium on Thursday, May 12th.

“This is the Matildas chance to shine,” said Stephanie. “Too often the Matildas fly under the radar compared to the Socceroos.

“This is such a special time for the Matildas – they are already the reigning champions of Asia and they have a fantastic side that should perform really well at World Cup level.

“It was so disappointing to hear that Katie Gill (Asian Player of the Year) is out of the squad due to a knee injury. She’s definitely one of the stars.

“Matildas coach Tom Sermanni has a very talented squad though and the striking talents of Kyah Simon, Lisa De Vanna and Sam Kerr are certainly up to the task.

“Sunday’s (May 15th) match against the Football Ferns will be a great opportunity to give these girls the send off they deserve – New Zealand are headed to Germany too, so with all the jostling for positions in both teams it should be a cracking game.

“I can’t wait!”

It airs on ABC1 on Sunday, May 15th at 3pm (Live AEST East Coast).
