American Idol: Lady Gaga to mentor

I'm sure this is being couched as a positive thing, but I just don't get it.

I’m sure this is being couched as a positive thing, but I just don’t get it.

Lady Gaga is set to mentor the final four contestants on American Idol: James Durbin, Scotty McCreery, Haley Reinhart and Lauren Alaina. In a bizarre fit, they will perform songs written by Leiber and Stoller, who wrote Elvis Presley hits, such as “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock.”

Ryan Seacrest tweeted: “I only have one word for our mentor on @AmericanIdol next week………. Gaga.”

How she is going to mentor country singer Scotty McCreery will be weird….. maybe something about theatricality?

Gaga will also perform at the Idol finale, as will Stevie Nicks. Performing at Idol is a win / win, but mentoring?

Gaga fans are reminded there is a concert on ELEVEN at 8:30pm Sunday night.

  1. I don’t understand the whole mentoring aspect of the show. The finalists know how to sing, that’s why they are finalists. The producers just bring aboard these ‘mentors’ to bring in some extra ratings, that’s all

In saying all that. I do love Gaga!,

  2. She can mentor them on how to be so desperate for attention you’d do anything to get it, how to rip off Madonna’s 20 year old hits and make new ones, how to take bits of Madonna, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Gwen Stefani, Debbie Harry, Bjork and Elton John and make your own new artist and how to bore everyone in a matter of 2 years to ensure your latest single is a complete failure.

    Fun!

  3. Gaga can teach them that you don’t need looks or a great singing voice to make it. But you do need that ‘X factor’. Oops, wrong show.

Actually, there is a lot that is applicable across all modern singing styles. I don’t see that she’s a bad fit.

  4. American Idol is the search for the next great American Idol. Not the best voice.
I’d say being probably the biggest Idol on the planet right now – it’s a good fit.
