Brothers & Sisters eyeing shorter season

Rachel Griffiths may not yet be unemployed, but she may have a lighter workload for Brothers and Sisters.

Following on from Rachel Griffiths’ Logies comments about impending unemployment, US media has taken closer scrutiny on Brothers and Sisters future.

There is now a report that claims ABC is plotting an abbreviated and final season for the drama.

The show’s budget was already reduced going into the current fifth season, which dropped down to 18 episodes, but later raised to 22. It will likely have to go down again for Season 6, because of soft ratings and expensive cast.

ABC this week said no decision had been made on its future but there is talk it is exploring scenarios for a final season that could range from 6 to 18 episodes.

As part of the changes it may also feature less of Calista Flockhart’s, ‘Kitty.’ According to Deadline, no talks with other actors are currently going on, but the cast is believed to have a minimum guarantee of 13 episodes.

  1. From what we have seen here in OZ so far, S5 has been poor but I have read some reviews of episodes still to air here and they are apparently much better. Can’t see the show getting another full season but maybe 8-12 episodes to tie things up properly would do as B&S was must see TV for S1-S4 and deserves to sent off in style, rather then having just a normal season finale as its final episode!

One of the my all time favourites season of any TV show was the final season of The OC which had just 16 episodes but was the right amount to end the show on a high – and it did in my opinion

  2. When B & S first started I thought it was the best show, and I still watch it, though I’d agree the quality of the storylines has declined somewhat. I am glad though that the producers are going to give it the respect it deserves and tie of the loose ends.

  3. I agree that a short season of 13 episodes may just tie up all the loose ends of storylines. It would finish the series off perfectly in my opinion.

  4. Agree. give it 10 to 13 episodes to tie it all up, some short seasons can be wonderful, look at the final season of The O.C for example.

  5. I don’t watch it but 6 seams a waste of time, it’s likely to settle around 13, if it’s bought back and then increased if the ratings pick up during those 13 eps.

I guess if the cast is guarantee 13 eps they don’t want to have to pay them out for work not done?

  6. Well this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The show has run it’s course, and if the 6th season is it’s final, having less episodes could really be good, considering there’s been so many awful filler episodes in the past few years.

  7. I think 10-13 eps to finish it off would be good. Just make sure it is a proper final season, not a 6th season with a series finale tacked onto the end. It definitely needs to end though.
