C31 launches new season

Melbourne's Channel 31 has a brand new season of community TV shows with no less than 22 brand new Australian programs.

Melbourne’s Channel 31 has a brand new season of community TV shows starting in June with no less than 22 brand new Australian programs.

They include Footy Tragic, a weekly analysis of the AFL Dream Team, Made by Hand, a slick look at local artisans and Melbourne Property, which puts the city’s real estate in the spotlight and Fringe Lane, (pictured) an insight into emerging and undiscovered facets on life in Melbourne.

Covering topics across a spectrum that includes art, music, fashion, food and life in general, Fringe Lane caters to an audience who want to step outside the social norm and experience something different. Bringing viewers content they wouldn’t normally see was a priority for the producers.

“We just felt there was no room on Australian television for something a bit different, a little left-of-centre, so this is our way of trying to change that,” said Tahlia Azaria, Fringe Lane Producer.

Fringe Lane is also about providing a unique platform to gain experience and exposure in a male-dominated industry. The program, which is hosted by Cristina Laria and includes weekly segments from Tegan Butler, Jackie Doran and Adriana Guerguinova, also has a production team of which almost half are female.
Co-Producer and Host Cristina Laria believes it’s often difficult for women who offer something different to get a foot in Australia’s television industry.

“All of the presenters on Fringe Lane want a career in front of the camera but it’s just not that easy in Australia. Opportunities like these are priceless. It’s the only way to get anywhere in this industry.”

Along with giving up-and-coming presenters opportunities in the limelight, Fringe Lane has also provided at-risk young people with on the job television production training through social enterprise Youthworx Productions.

Young people under 18 have gained skills in production by operating cameras, audio and lights on shoots and by assisting in editing segments for the program.

Fringe Lane will air every Wednesday at 8.00pm on Melbourne’s Channel 31 (Digital Channel 44) starting on Wednesday 8th June.

  1. C31 wants to adds Perth-based community TV programs will switch over to C31 Melbourne expands across nationally, were the new home of Antenna Awards and then brand new News Geelong.

  2. A Dream Team show should do fairly well, there’s over 300,000 people playing DT and most of the other AFL programs just tack little bits about it and/or Super Coach (350k players) at the end of their shows.
