Dancing with the Twitter-storms

Dancing with the Stars returns with a minor controversy involving Sonia Kruger, Brynne Edelsten and Twitter.

Dancing with the Stars must be back on air.

How else do we explain a minor controversy (aka storm in a teacup) involving Sonia Kruger, Brynne Edelsten and Twitter?

Things got started with new judge Josh Horner’s critique of Edelsten’s dancing, described as “a bedazzled potato sack rolling down stairs.” Ouch.

But it began trending after comments Kruger made to her when hosting in the Green Room segment of the show.

Never shy of a cheeky remark, Kruger said, “I think it’s nice you get on so well with your dad.” With her husband Geoffrey Edelsten sitting in the audience, it triggered a wave of Twitter comments.

Mikkijr: Sonia Kruger shame on you. Speaking to Brynne that way. You should apologise and should be sacked #dwts

ralphbuttigieg: I did think that some of the comments about Brynne on DWTS were unnecessary sexist and rude.

purcelltweet: Twitter gave Ch7 the msg that #DWTS viewers were horrified. who does @SoniaKruger think she is?

Kruger later admitted it was a “brain freeze” and Tweeted: I do love Brynne! She is much fun and we all wish her fun on this show xx

She apologised on air to Brynne Edelsten, presenting her with a flower.

Interestingly, the show embraced Twitter last night by adding Q & A style Tweets at the bottom of the screen, but none of the ones criticising Kruger made it to air. Last year The Xtra Factor added Tweets too, but only the complimentary ones. While shows cherry-pick 140 characters that duly give them a pat on the back, they might as well just write their own ones.

Meanwhile the Daily Telegraph hints that Geoffrey Edelsten let fly at a judge after his wife’s critique. If reports that he wagered a million dollar bet on her winning the show are true then it isn’t hard to see why.

But it all plays perfectly into the network’s hands. Nobody was harmed and the show gets some free publicity to remind everyone it’s back on air with cheesy cha-chas and fragile egos.

What more do you want?

  1. What role model the judges are on Dancing with the Stars, in prime time viewing we show our children that to teach and motivate you should abuse, humilitate and put people down. Then when dancers do well the judges take credit how conceited are they???? The dancers should be applauded for their dignity.

  2. For any man or woman to speak to any person in such a manner should be ashamed of themselves.society as a whole should be moving foward, not watching trashy reality shows who rubbish individuals.channel 7 your judges and host are a pack of dogs.

  4. Time they moved Sonia Kruger on, this “D” grade celeb is overaged, over fake tanned, and under mannerd, I whole heartedly agree with Allie, she was part of a premeditated attack on Brynne to “knock her down a peg or two” They only other Australian host to make me cringe as much as this mob was dear old Bert Newton when ever he got in front of a crowd, OMG where’s the remote

  5. it’s a publicity stunt. to get more viewers to try and beat master chef. they all know it and it’s pathetic. she isn’t a star and she is a terrible dancer

  6. DWTS always has a very effective publicity machine , whether it is bad or good, when I worked on the first seven series, CH7 PR would leak “scandals” about contestants sleeping each other, fights and spats between contestants and all that crap.
Now with it up against Masterchef, the need to put this into overdrive, and they would be loving the attention,
On Radio last night they were mentioning how it ‘Smashed” Masterchelf albeit by 85k of viewers

  7. There were radio interviews with Brynne and Sonia. I even heard Fifi and Jules peddling it as an exclusive, as if she were Bin Laden. Methinks some of the other comments are spot on in calling publicity stunt. I mean, it really isn’t that big a deal that it should make the news…

  8. Sonia Kruger should be replaced. This is not the first time she has been scarcastic in her comments. I remember when Waterhouse was on the show and she made some comment about “Fine Cotton”. Sonia has got too big for her boots and should be taken back a peg. She needs to be reminded about her own shortcomings.

  9. Dancing With The – cough – Stars! The Edelsten’s know they are an easy target, flashing their wealth and bad taste at any opportunity. Logies anyone? It’s almost like you can see that “Pia Zadora wins a Golden globe” moment happening all over again. If you put yourself out there on trash telly then expect the cheap shots. 7 needed to stir up publicity to counteract Masterchef and guess what. It worked. Oh boy did it work.

  10. Every reality TV show requires a narrative and it’s the job of the network publicists to write that narrative. Here is a case in point. Nothing more. Anyone doubt this ‘controversy’ will be a major story on TT tonight?

  11. I thought the comments directed at Brynne were in very bad taste.
Unfortunately, DWTS has done this kind of thing before.
Someone should speak to Sonia … or replace her with someone with a little more dignity & refrain … Not every thought that comes into your head must be spoken!!!

Apart from that, it wasn’t a bad show.

    I’ll be watching next week.

  12. I really thought they treated Brynne poorly. I think they see her as an easy target to make fun of as she lives such an extravagant lifestyle. I think there’s ways to comment on her dancing to improve, but not to compare her to a sack potatoes. I thought Sonia was downright insulting. They were very nice to Lara Bingle. I didn’t see Lara asking her about Fev or Michael Clarke … or keep saying “Where the bloody hell are you”.

  13. I have never watched this show and care not at all for the “stars’ in it, but am intrigued by what Twitter may yet do to change social behaviour.
I used to think that Twitter was just for twits and those interested in twits, but with so many ‘stars’ being berated for mindless tweets (even in David’s blog, with twits ranging from Koch to Josh Thomas taken to task) we may see a return to the polite old days when people engaged their brain before they opened their mouths – or unleashed their thumbs!

  14. And Sonia Kruger is no looker either, have you seen her with no make up??? if you think she is ordinary with make up, hsould see her without>>>

  15. Brynne Edelsten? Lara Bingle’s Best Friend? Twitter? Cross Promotion? Publicity? Apologies? Sonia Kruger making jokes?

Sounds like a recipe for a television trainwreck to me.

    How low can we go?

  16. I like Brynne, and I like Sonia, but I do feel Sonia’s comment was nasty. People are so hung up about age differences in relationships. Love and companionship are the most important element of a relationship, and Brynne and Geoffrey seem very happy, so good on them. Hold your head up high Brynne.

  17. I have never watched DWTS but was out last night and my friends had it on. Sonia Kruger seems to be overstepping the role of host. Isn’t she supposed to introduce people and then ask them how they felt about their performance? She appeared to me be to be rude and nasty. No need to state the obvious we all know that Mrs Edelstein’s husband is significantly older and closer to Kruger’s age.

  18. The comment that Sonia made was i think cheeky thats all. If Brynne found it offensive then maybe because it is true. Brynne was not the first to marry a old rich guy and she will not be the last. The practice is as old as industrialisation if not older. Its amazing how the alternative media (internet) go in to overdrive over these types of incidents. As for Brynne’s future in the competition i think that she will not last long as the new judge Josh Horner said “a bedazzled potato sack rolling down stairs.” with a comment like that she will be out by second week.

  19. This has definitely been the season with the least amount of stars – but I felt bad for Brynne – you can tell she’s a nice person. In the intro she said she was just doing this to be accepted by Australia – I genuinely believe her! She was near on tears at the the end of the judging, then Sonia made it ten times worse.

  20. lol Seven would be lapping this up. Wonder what holier than thou host of The Bunnings show, Joanna Griggs thinks about such cheap shots? I guess she won’t be big noting herself over this.

  21. The reason why I watch this show is for Sonia’s bitchy backstage comments. These ‘stars’ get paid and to dance on the show all in the name of extra publicty for their new tv show/book/album or whatever else they are trying to flogg in the marketplace so why not take them down a peg or two in the process? Geoffery and his wife will do almost anything to get in the media they were nobodys before she showed up half naked at the Brownlows and made thier wedding look like the logies but starts sooking like a 5y.o when the rest of the counrty laughs at them. This show has been running for over half a decade and the contestants should know by now what to expect from the judges and Sonia. If they don’t like it then why on earth did they agree to participate.?

If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!

  22. Funny as it was, Kruger was wrong to say that about Edelsten but there was no implication of incest taking place. The correct interpretation of the line is that the man she (presumably) sleeps with is old enough to be her (grand)dad, not *is* her dad.

    Right joke, wrong program.

Why else would anyone be watching this show if it wasn’t to see B-grade and non-celebrities make fools of themselves and be made fools of?
